Disk Utility Image resize errors

I had an encrypted disk image that was near full (~20GB). I followed the process in Disk Utility to increase its size (Image-->resize).. I intended to grow it to 40GB, but there was a typo apparently and it ended up at 400GB, consuming most of my HD. When I try to resize it back down to 40GB, I now get an error message in disk utility with no mitigation options....so I'm stuck w/ this beast of an image consuming my drive.

"operation failed with Status 22: Invalid Argument"

Any ideas?

Copy the data off it (to an external drive if needed), delete the disk image, and make a new one of the correct size.
