Things stored on my phone vs what goes to the Cloud questions

I'm not very familiar with how all of the Apple options work.

I'm still learning about the Cloud, Apple ID, and how to set up my latest phone upgrade.

Here's my question;

In my "Notes" app there are some notes that show "iCloud" and some notes that show,

"On my iPhone"

Obviously somewhere at some time I pushed a button to make that happen without knowing any better.

So what determines where information is stored, and what's the difference.

For instance if I lose my phone, will the messages that show "iCloud" be accessible from a

PC, and the ones that show, "On my iPhone will not?

Sorry for all of the sophomoric questions, but this is a learning curve for me.

Thanks for any help

Bob

I always use iCloud notes. The reason I do it though is because I have an iPhone, an iPad and a MacBook and I want my notes synced across all my devices.

The main thing to understand is that iCloud isn't really a backup service, it's more of a syncing service. So if you were to use iCloud notes and then delete the note from your phone, the note is also deleted from iCloud.

On the other hand, if your iPhone were to take a dump and/or you got a replacement phone, I believe those notes would restore (sync) themselves when you sign in with your Apple ID and turn on Notes in iCloud.

Using iCloud notes also allows you to see your notes online at iCloud.com if that is useful to you at all.

If not using iCloud, the notes would be contained in the iPhone backup that you should be making regularly (regardless of the method you choose). If the phone were to have issues and need to be reset, you'd use your recent iPhone backup to restore content to your iPhone, including your notes.

Notes are stored based on which Notes app you in. For instance if you open Notes app under "On My iPhone" and select new Notes then it will be stored under "On My iPhone"

Similar is the case, if you open Notes app under iCloud and select new Notes then it will be stored under iCloud.

Thanks for the reply.

In the past I hadn't used the cloud, or understood it for that matter, that's why it was

so confusing as to how it got split up.

Lately I'm trying to get a better understanding of all things Apple since I just upgraded

my phone. My old phone was six years old and I wasn't interested in keeping up with the

Cloud or technology.

So what is the general consensus?

What do you guys choose?

If you choose the Cloud that information doesn't get backed up, or does it?

If it in fact does not get backed up, how would you get it back to the phone or iPad if needed?

Thanks

Hey, thanks for the info.

Starting to get a big picture, but not there yet.

I'll look at your links, but in the meantime, where do I go to sync?

Basically I use a PC, an iPad, and my phone.

Do I want to sync them all so the information is consistent across all three?

Right now my phone gives me -54 error I think it is and says it can't sync to iTunes.

Is it a big deal if it doesn't sync to iTunes?

It still lets me back up to the PC and the Cloud.

So many questions...

Thanks again

Bob
