How to fix Apple Pencil Gen 2 that won’t take a charge.

Unfortunately there are several posts here instructing you to throw away your Apple Pencil Gen 2 when the battery won’t take a charge as it is permanently ruined and must be replaced. This is untrue.

The posts that claim this are all old and locked so I can’t go in there to warn people. The mods should really consider removing those threads as I almost threw my $100 Apple Pencil away last night after reading those posts. I now have a perfectly functioning and charging Apple Pencil this morning.

The posts claim that if you don’t keep a charge on the Apple Pencil that it’s tiny battery will be permanently damaged and become unchargable. Well I lost my Pencil for over 6 months and just found it last night. I tried to charge it and it wouldn’t go above 3%. As a matter of fact after an hour it went to 2% and then I left it overnight charging and I woke up to 1%, then 0%. This was the point when I thought it was done-for and almost ordered another one. What I did next fixed it.

I took the Pencil and held it at the top of the iPad and let it magnetically connect to start charging. The moment the iPad detected the Pencil I removed it. I did this over and over and over while doing some reading and then suddenly I noticed it was at 2% battery life. I left it there and it quickly went higher and higher reaching 100% battery life.

I removed the Pencil and let it sit for over an hour to see if it would actually hold that charge, and it was still at 100% when I checked it. As far as I can tell it is working perfectly.

So people please, if your Pencil isn’t charging, don’t throw them away just yet.
