I am facing the same "(primary) your SIM sent a text message" pop up issue on my newly purchased iPhone 12, checked if there's any carrier update, reset the network settings, re-inserted the SIM, took back up and tried factory reset, observed the phone with no data on it, however, there's no luck.. Still getting the same pop up (even the phone is locked) frequently. Checked with Airtel, they said, they got nothing to do with this issue. Tried the same SIM on old iPhone 7, no such pop ups..

Does that mean issue with the new iPhone 12?

Apple needs to refund the money along with the compensation...

I too am facing this issue. However, the SIM that is giving me these notifications was previously on my Android phone and it's currently the physical SIM on my iPhone 12.

The eSIM on my iPhone 12 was previously on my iPhone 7 and that seems to work fine as I didn't see any flash notification that a message was sent out of this eSIM.

Summarising:

  1. Issue is with the physical SIM that I previously used on my Android phone
  2. The SIM from my iPhone 7 that I converted to the eSIM on my iPhone 12 works fine
  3. Carrier version for both SIMs is AirTel 44.0
  4. WiFi Calling enabled on both of them.
  5. Used "Transfer data from old iPhone" to setup my iPhone 12
  6. The physical SIM that is giving me these notifications is the first SIM I used on the new iPhone 12 and is currently set as my secondary SIM.

Not quite everyone - I’m on a two year old iPhone 7 and started getting these pop ups about a year ago. My carrier is Tracfone and I believe I am using the same SIM I got four and a half years ago.

(Note: this starts with a dismiss button in the bottom right corner but if I don’t click it right away the button vanishes after a second and the pop up vanishes the next second.)

I only get this once every couple months so it’s not on a super regular basis.

I have the same issue on my new iPhone 12. Never noticed this pop-up earlier on my iPhone X. Strangely, I too am on Airtel India, but using a physical sim and not an e-sim.

So far I have tried 1) reset Network settings 2) Restart phone 3) Remove sim and put it back, but nothing has worked.

Are people affected getting billed for the sms the phone seems to send? Next I will try replacing my simcard with a new sim.If that doesn't work will be moving to an e-sim.

Seems like an issue isolated with Airtel. I am on carrier version 44.0, which seems to be the latest.

Oh, that is a big step. Can you check if Airtel can reprovision services on your sim. Tell them 'They need to reprovision services on your sim, as the sim card is sending chargeable messages from your number'. If they say, they won't/can't ,tell that MNP is the only option left for you.

Back in Blackberry days, they had this thing called reprovisioning of GPRS services on sim, which would fix a lot of carrier issues. Not sure if it still exists, but worth a try. Once I get my bill and see charges for sms, I will go to the gallery and chew their brains. My plan has 1000 national sms free, but I am sure these must be special sms's and chargeable.

This is happening only with the Airtel sim( Vi, Jio users chime in!). The same sim in an older iPhone works correctly. The 14.3 iOs update and Airtel Network update to 45.0, seem to have made things worse. The pop-ups have increased. I wasn't charged for any text messages by Airtel in my last months bill.

Can't really figure what to make of it and whom to blame. If this doesn't stop after a few more iOs /Airtel network updates, will switch to e-sim for a while to see if that rules out the issue. Don't want to change to Vi or Jio, for an issue which is just an irritant.

So, i guess i am late to the party but seems like all those who are facing issue have some things in common.

  1. Airtel as service provider
  2. Switched from older iPhone to new iPhone 12 (all versions probably)
  3. Used "Transfer data from old iPhone" when setting up

Could be that the issue is related to sim and device validation at carrier end and somehow, restoring backup from older iPhone to new one breaks it. Airtel knows about the issue and on pinging them on twitter i received a call and was told to swap the sim (although they are not sure if that will work). On asking what if it doesn't work, they were clueless.

As of now it seems no one has found a solution. Given many people are facing this issue and it is one of the most annoying ones i have seen, Apple and Airtel might want to step in to atleast say whats going on.
