Certain videos will not play in Photos app after updating to ios 14

After updating to iOS 14, I found that certain videos on my iPad will not play. On the images of the videos, there is a circle with an exclamation mark in it. It says “Unable to load video. An error occurred while loading a higher quality version of this video.” If I tap Edit, it says “This video cannot be edited because it is not supported.” The videos are either .mp4 or .MOV, formats that are supposed to be compatible with my iPad.

Updating to iOS 14.0.1 did not fix this problem, with all the bug fixes it’s said to have.

Though it’s funny. I find I am able to play these videos perfectly in a third party app like PlayerXtreme. What is going on? My videos can’t be corrupted, especially if I can play them in a third party app.

The upgrade to iOS 14 and macOS 10.15 has broken several Video formats. I had to convert many of my QuickTime videos (MOV) and mp4 videos, because they have been using a codec, that is no longer supported.

The container formats MOV, mp4, AVI do not tell us anything about the codecs of the video components inside. It would have been easier to convert the videos before the upgrade to iOS 14, while you still had a system that supported them.

I have converted all videos from this list for iMovie (About incompatible media in iMovie for macOS - Apple Support) to HEVC or H.264 on an older Mac, that is still running macOS 10.14. After that I could use them again on my iPhone with iOS 14.
