MacBook Air has white screen with coloured lines

I turned my MacBook Air on and it came up with a white screen with coloured vertical lines (see picture). After a while the screen goes grey and the lines darken. Does anyone know what the problem might be?

Hello kiera78,

Thanks for asking the Apple Support Communities for help with your Mac not booting and lines on the display.

1. Check if the computer can boot to macOS Recovery: About macOS Recovery - Apple Support

2. If it can, you might want to check the troubleshooting here: If your Mac starts up to a blank screen - Apple Support

3. If you have the same issue or can't get to macOS Recovery, have the computer checked at an Apple Authorized Service Provider or Apple Store. You may want to contact the Apple Authorized Service Provider in your area and ask if they require an appointment to check the computer. Please make an appointment if you are visiting an Apple Store. If possible, you will want to make a backup before taking the computer in to your appointment: Back up your Mac with Time Machine - Apple Support

4. Also, you will need to have your Apple ID and password handy when visiting a service provider. Check this help article under the bottom section titled "Get ready for service" for other items to ensure you are prepared: Mac Service and Repair - Apple Support
