Apple pencil not working after iPadOS 14.0.1 update

I have iPad 6th generation and Apple Pencil 1st generation and had no problems with it until I updated my iPad to iOS 14.0.1

I am able to pair/re-pair the pencil and it shows it is connected with my iPad. It also gets charged/discharged properly and able to see the charge status under Setting -> Apple Pencil.

However, when I try to use it in any application (native or 3rd party) the pencil doesn't work.

Additional info, the pencil was working fine with public beta version of iOS 14.0.1, however when I removed my beta profile and installed final build of iOS, the pencil stopped working.

Has anyone else experienced this? Can anyone please help here?

Hello Everybody, I have a good news to share with you. I have finally managed to solve this problem mentioned in my original post (question).

Even after upgrading to iPadOS 14.1 the problem was still persistent, but then I decided to enrol my iPad to beta program and upgraded it to iPadOS 14.2 and my Apple Pencil v.1.0 started working normally.

I do not know if this problem is solved in iPadOS 14.2 but definitely solved in iPadOS beta program's 14.2 update.

I can live with the beta version of iPadOS as I need apple pencil to work over being on stable iPadOS release.

Thank you all for your help and comments, I really appreciate the time that you took out to respond to my original post.

I suggest that you try a forced-restart of your iPad - as this will often resolve an isolated issue:

  • On an iPad with a Home button: Press and hold the top button and the Home button at the same time. When the Apple logo appears, release both buttons.
  • On an iPad with Face ID: Press and quickly release the volume up button, press and quickly release the volume down button, then press and hold the top button. When the Apple logo appears, release the button.

If this doesn’t resolve the issue, ensure that you have an iCloud or iTunes backup of your iPad - then Factory Reset the iPad. The Factory reset will install a fresh copy of iPadOS 14.0.1 - and reset all settings. At conclusion of the restore process, you have the opportunity to restore your locally stored data from your backup.

I hope this information and guidance proves to be helpful in resolving the issue.

Hello! I don’t know if you’e tried this but this happened to my Apple Pencil Generation 1 for the first time today and I Googled a few interventions:

1) Clean the inside of the tip.

2) Clean the lightning port.

3) Force restart your iPad.

4) Update your iPadOS 14 to the latest one.

5) Update the firmware of your Apple Pencil (click on this video for instructions, if ever you need them: https://youtu.be/VKx4vXBIK3A)

I tried them all and none of them seemed to work. However, when I did #5 for the first time, I didn’t know my iPadOS wasn’t updated yet to 14.1. So it didn’t work. After I updated it to 14.1, I tried #5 again and it hasn’t disconnected by itself so far.

Hope everyone finds this helpful and you all stay safe!

Similar problem. iOS 14.0.1 update. Followed the steps. No joy.

However:

1) My iPad 9.5 Pro is in a case.

2) I just shoved the Pencil into the lightning port.

Got the error that it was taking too long. So...

1) Removed the iPad from the case and tried again. No joy.

2) Flipped the pencil around and it paired.

Yes, the Lightning port is supposed to be universal (or omnidirectional) but it appears that the direction mattered. For me, it was with the words on the little silver band on the pencil facing me.

There is clearly a bug in iOS 14 for existing Apple devices. Seeing similar things with the iPhone and iWatch.

Good luck.

The pen was disconnected the whole night.

then in the morning I put the pen to the iPad socket and in the first place there was no pop up or loading circle. I opened the Bluetooth Settings and the pen was visible again. I chose the Apple Pen from the list and there came a pop up that I can pair the Pen again with the iPad. And it worked

In your situation, if your description is correct, you have a problem with your Pencil.

Lightning connectors should work either way up. The female connector (i.e., the iPad) has connection pins on one side of the connector only - whilst the male connector (the Pencil or cable) has pads on both sides of the blade.

Your pencil has dirty/contaminated/damaged/disconnected pads on one side of the blade.
