help: external hard drives show 0 items until reboot

I'm baffled. In the past couple of months I've developed a problem where my external hard drives (I have three) will individually, or sometimes in multiples, suddenly show "0 items" and no files listed, although the available space is accurate. The fact that it's happening on two drives at the same time make me think it's not a hard drive problem. Additionally, if I do a system reboot everything returns to normal... for awhile.

I'm using OS 10.14.6 (and don't want to upgrade because I'd lose legacy apps) on a 27-inch iMach (late 2015). Seems like a finder problem, maybe, but I can't find a solution and this is driving me crazy!

Apple hid the Users' Library folders...

  1. From the Finder, select the Go menu at top of the screen, and choose Go to Folder.
  2. In the window that opens, enter ~/Library, and click Go.
