what is the file "Pictures" vs Photos?

On my MacBook pro there is a file (with logo) called pictures. I'm confused about its origin and usefulness. How is this different from the photos app? I think I can delete it, but it keeps popping up in photo files/libraries. It is probably old and I never cleaned it up. If anyone has info I would greatly appreciate help.

It's not a file, it's a folder and it's part of the basic install of the OS, along with your Documents, Downloads, Music folders etc. By default it will contain your Photos Library and other images. Don't delete it. The OS wants it and it'll be confused if you do.

pictures and different libraries... confusing?

There are many ways to deal with photographs and images on your Mac. Whichever you decide to use, the Pictures Folder is the designated home for that system. One of those ways is to use the Photos application that comes free with your Mac. That has a library, and that library goes in your Pictures Folder. But you don't have to use Photos, you can use the File Manager (Finder) or some other app: Adobe Bridge, Adobe Lightroom Classic, Graphic Converter, CaptureOne, OnOne Photo Raw etc etc. Whichever solution you choose to manage your images the home for that is the Pictures Folder.

Hi Peach13! Understand the confusion for sure. The Pictures folder usually contains all of your pictures, not only your “PhotosLibrary” file, (Or iPhoto Library....the older version of PhotosLibrary), but a lot of times when you import pictures from an external device, (e.g. a phone or camera), depending on the app it’’s done with and the destination locations, a lot of times the photos will go into the Pictures Folder, (unless otherwise specified). The main folders in the home folder (your name) are just general folders where you can basically store any type of files you want, but it just makes it easy for organizational purposes.

If you wanted to, you could even create a “Photos” folder and place in anywhere, but in my experience, keeping it simple is the best way to go.

Hope that helps!
