My beloved Mackbook Pro 2012/13 has begun to flounder and I need help.

I have had a problem getting past my login screen for sometime, so tried to restart in recovery mode. I managed to erase the disc and reinstall the latest OS.

As the reinstall was almost complete the screen went black. I left it for a few minutes the pressed the power button. I got the chime but the screen remained black. Any advice would be warmly welcomed. To get my MacBook back would mean the world. Thanks in advance. AH

Yes, the GPU is part of the Logic Board and would cost a minimum of $400 US to replace. The laptop is considered "Vintage" so an AASP would only be able to repair it if the part was still available. If it is the GPU issue, then disabling the discrete GPU is the best option for a laptop this old. Please let us know how you make out with it.

If you have to ask, then I don't recommend you replacing the Logic Board yourself especially when Apple may still repair it for you. Besides doing it yourself the Logic Board will either have someone else's serial number or the serial number will be blank which can cause problems with some AppleID & cloud based features.

As for forcing the laptop to use the Intel GPU this is something that you can do yourself. If you cannot boot the laptop normally or into Safe Mode to install the gfxCardStatus app, then check out other ways to disable the discrete GPU:
