Open Dialogue boxes don't list todays's files Error.

Both my desktop imac and my macbook pro running Catalina fail to list recently created files in 'open' dialogue boxes. They appear in the finder and my only recourse is to drag and drop for example to Mac Mail when I am trying to add attachments. This has been going on for at least a year, through various Catalina updates. There is an expired chat on the same topic: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/250726393 which did not list any resolution. Has anyone out there got a fix please. Its really annoying.
