IOS14 severe battery drain on SE

Since updating to ios14, my battery on the SE is just terrible and drops considerably. I have spoken to Apple support who did a diagnotics check and booked me in to an apple store for further investigate. The apple store states that nothing wrong with battery and they performed a systsem reset. Unfortunately no difference with battery performance. Phone was fine before the upgrade with a once a day charge. Anyone else had similar and is apple going to fix this with a further update. The phone is no good to me with constant charging.

My first gen SE battery began dropping like a stone after the 14.3 iOS update. I am an older user and I do not use many apps at all. I would go out with the phone at 100% and two hours later it would be down in the weeds (< 20%). After a complete backup/reset/restore I managed to get it somewhat back under control, and I turned off automatic sw updates. Then I forgot about the iOS issue (I'm getting older - give me a break); got annoyed at always seeing the red "1" on my Settings icon; and "accidentally" updated to 14.4 last week. Then I found and read through this forum. I live too far from an Apple store, so I made an appointment at my local Best Buy through the Apple support website. Showed up at Best Buy yesterday. "Oh, we don't support that older model anymore. Apple doesn't even give us the tools/training to work on it anymore. We've tried notifying Apple several times because people with older phones keep coming in with Apple appointments. It's how they get you to buy a new phone." Best Buy referred me to a local cell phone repair shop. They replaced the battery for $70 at Noon PST 3/6/21. Phone changed from 83% battery health to 100%; showed it had a 71% charge; and hasn't budged from that since then. It feels like a brand new phone, and I'm a happy camper.

No doubt many people have had 1st gen SE battery problems, and many have had iOS 14 software problems with battery charge measurement and calibration. It isn’t either/or, and both problems are real. And whoever said Apple doesn’t respond to forum posts just hasn’t experienced it yet. I have. Apple is choosing to ignore these issues.

Before I go, here is an example of phone behavior that has nothing to do with a battery being weak or having “internal leaks”:

1st gen iPhone SE operating normally with iOS 13, BATTERY MAX CAPACITY 89%, charge lasts all day if no video used.

Upgrade this phone with a full charge to iOS 14.4.1, BATTERY MAX CAPACITY 89% after the upgrade. Phone streams Netflix almost an hour before dropping to 99% charge, then takes 20 minutes to drop to 65%. Power it off and back on, it’s 51%. Off and on again, it’s 38%. Run it down below 1%, it shuts down, but plug it in and immediately you have 11% with it rising to 30% in 5 minutes. Run it down to 1% again, and watch it stream Netflix for 2 hours on 1% charge. This is a problem with the measurement of charge and the calibration of the measuring tool. Not a hardware problem.

Agreed. That said, the iPhone SE batteries are a weak point, and often need replacing after only two years of use. Although apple will not admit that as a problem, iOS14.x has exposed that weakness for many dissatisfied customers. But if you want to stay with Apple, a new battery is probably required. The batteries are not terribly expensive, so most just bite that bullet.

I am surprised that Apple has still not admitted that iOS 14+ is draining the batteries on 1st gen. iPhone SEs. That does not seem to be true for every user, but judging by this thread, it is certainly a trouble for many, and some of those many got their SEs as recently as 2018, and a few of them have even replaced the batteries and still had trouble

Yes, many people have also reported that they have not had trouble, or that a new battery solved the problem, or that turning off something power-hungry like the hotspot, or a demanding application, reduced the problem. But there are still enough people reporting problems, that those counter-examples should not cancel out the complaints.

Are any of the posts on this thread from Apple itself? Could we get an official statement of Apple's position, whether it addresses the facts or not? It does not seem very productive for users to simply talk among themselves about their varying experiences, when some users seem to having real problems using their iPhone SEs in any reliable way.

Many thanks for your reply and much appreciated. My phone is the first gerneration SE but its only just over 2 years old and was brought directly from Apple store. Its annoying if they sell new phones and then in a short space of time release an update thats not going to be really compatible. So many people are complaining about the battery drain and I hope that maybe there might be some improvement with future updates. The battery health is showing at 91. For now I put the phone in low power mode and this does help somewhat. Nevertheless, its very annoying that 14.0.1 has caused this issue. I thank you for the time in replying to me.

yo sorry for the late reply, for some reason i never got an email that you replied till now (like, literally even in the time stamp of the email), but that does sound like an amazing fix, especially considering those apps, although being mainstream and popular, are still apps that have a lot of features and especially a lot of online features, i hope his reply does you well but still bear in mind, even if your phone is 2 years old, remember that that thing came out in 2016, likewise, remember the iPhone 5s was amazing for its time, but trying to run iOS 14 on an iPhone 5s (ignoring the fact that its unsupported) would not work well at all, and its the same for your phone, don't get me wrong, its a good phone, that's why its supported, but just because its supported, doesn't mean its going to be great on iOS 14, so basically, i'm saying that maybe, just maybe you should upgrade to help at least a little, but i'm not going to lie, not everyone has the money to upgrade, especially considering the pandemic right now, but tbh i'd still take it into consideration, its up to you though and tbh i really, REALLY hope what CGbates said works well for you (because tbh it does sound like it will, if you have any other questions feel free to ask away and i or someone else (especially CBgates) would love to respond further
