Using Mini as external drive to Macbook

With all the working at home, my boss is getting me a new MacBook, which I will hook up to my current monitor and keyboard for daily use. I have found the adaptors for that. But I want to keep my personal MacMini like an external drive, so if I have to give up the MacBook, I will still have my personal files stored on the mini. Can I do that and what cables do I need?

Thanks!

If your not moving a lot of large files, then File Sharing over your local network or a direct Ethernet connection works fine.

Plus you can also use Screen Sharing to control the headless Mac Mini's desktop.

If you want to use the faster Thunderbolt connection for Target Disk Mode, then we need to know exactly what year model your Mac Mini and the Mac Book are, in order to help you with the correct adapter and cable connection.
