I did an install of catalina onto my Mac Mini hard drive from an external Hard
External USB Drive has Mojave for 32 bit apps
500 GB HD, 16 GB RAM, Late 2012 model
Mac mini, OS X 10.11
Go to Finder >> Preferences >> Enable " Show Hard Disk " the icon will appear on Desktop.
After the good wheel sopped spinning the MacOS Catalina was installed on my internal hard drive. However it now has 3 icons; Macintosh Hardrive, Macintosh Hardeive (data) & Macintosh Hardrive (data). After a couple of restarts the icon disappeared completely. I then reinstalled MacOs Catalina, it went faster this time but icons for Macintosh Hardrive are still missing but it is mounted. FRUSTRATING!
Installation of Catalina feature changes - it has a write Only container called Macintosh HD - Data and Macintosh HD. The Macintosh HD are protected System files and the Macintosh HD - Data are where user files are kept. This is totally normal
To really see ALL Volumes, Open Terminal >> " diskutil list " Note, there is a single space between Diskutil and list. Tell us want the output says or better still give us a screen shot.
Or try Open Disk Utilities and give us a screen shot.
Why must the icon(s) in question be on the desktop? If you explain what purpose it serves?
CORRECTION - Macintosh HD - DATA should say READ ONLY. Sorry about that, my bad.
Read more about APFS of Apple. The short answer about restoring the two icons is it should not be on the Desktop
