I updated my iphone 11 to ios14. Now my AirPods won’t work. They connect to my iphone but the sound still plays through the phone speakers.
Connected them to my wife’s phone and they worked perfectly.
How can this be fixed?

Open Settings ➔ Bluetooth : Locate your iPods in the list and then tap on the "i" to the right of the name. Choose Forget this Device. After that you can pair your AirPods to your iPhone again and see whether that resolves the issue.

Funny story, only reason I figured it out was that like you, worked perfectly for my wife but not me. Tried several things to troubleshoot and arrived at this fix. I’m guessing you’re wife doesn’t use an Apple Watch either :)

Might be a bit late but wondering if you have an Apple Watch also paired to your iPhone?
I had the same issue and turning off my Apple Watch fixed the issue. Paired and connected AirPods like a charm on my XS running on iOS 14.1. Don’t know how feasible this solution is but hope you’ve had some luck in the mean time.
