iMac won't print to HP M452nw via EtherNet but will via USB

Via elimination & substitution I've narrowed the issue to either the OS or hardware difference by substituting a MBP for the iMac. Both are running the same HP Easy Start software and software. I have substituted or eliminated all networking cables, switch, configuration, etc. The iMac & HP Utility cannot find the M452 over the EtherNet connection, but does & prints fine over the USB connection, ditto for a HP P3015. The MBP finds the M452 via both connections. If I try to print to M452 via EtherNet from the iMac, the print dialog box shows the printer with a circle to the left with a ~ inside it. If I press print, the printer appears in the dock, but printing stalls with a "printer is not connected" and "The printer is offline" messages. I tried to configure a generic postscript printer for the M452 and when I try to print, there's no dot w/~ but printing stalls with "The printer is not responding" message. In all cases the printer is Ready and even wakes up when printing via USB.

Thus it appears either an iMac hardware or firmware issue, or an OS software issue. Is CUPS different between the two?

Personally I never install HP's sofware, at best it is badly written and using Mac OS I have found it 100% unnecessary. BTW, I worked for HP for years.

My recommendation is to uninstall the HP software first and then reset the printing system and then install the printer per Apple's instructions.

Hi there NWman,

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities. It looks like you have some questions about using your printer as a network printer. That printer is AirPrint capable according to our article: About AirPrint.

To use a network or AirPrint capable printer, like yours, see steps here: Add a printer on Mac.

This article from HP will show you how to configure the printer for AirPrint: HP LaserJet Pro - Set up, Install, and Configure AirPrint.

If you prefer to use the printer as a wired network printer, see how here: HP Printers - Wired Network Printer Setup (Mac).

We hope this helps!
