iCloud, the thief and hoarder.

When I try to deselect desktop and documents from things stored in iCloud so that I have access to my documents without it trying to tell me I need to buy more storage, I am prompted with a window telling me that my documents will be deleted from MY MAC and stored IN the icloud?!! I'm trying to get them OFF the iCloud and kept on my Mac. What gives? I feel like iCloud is this sinister thing that is trying to steal all my stuff and won't give it back.

How can I just keep stuff on my Mac, and use my external hard-drive when my storage gets too full. Especially now that iCloud has taken possession of my documents.

Greetings, ykwombat.

It appears that you'd like to stop using iCloud Drive to sync your documents across devices. The problem you're facing when you deselect "Desktop & Documents Folders", you receive a message that your documents will deleted from your Mac and stored in iCloud. We understand how disconcerting this message can be, and we're glad to help with this.

Add your Desktop and Documents files to iCloud Drive - Apple Support -- Scroll down to the section titled "Turn off Desktop and Documents". This section explains what happens when you turn this feature off. You'll simply move those documents to another to the place you'd like to keep them on your Mac.

Use iCloud.com - Apple Support -- When your documents are safely on your Mac, you can sign into iCloud using a browser and delete the documents you no longer wish to store in iCloud Drive.

Feel free to get back to us with any questions or problems you may have.

Take care.

See these articles https://support.apple.com/en-in/guide/mac-help/mchl1a02d711/mac

Move items to your Mac and remove them from iCloud Drive

  • On your Mac, drag items from iCloud drive to another folder in the Finder sidebar or on the desktop, such as Downloads, Movies, Music and Pictures.
  • The items are copied to your Mac and removed from iCloud Drive on all your devices set up for iCloud. If you change your mind, you can drag items back to iCloud Drive.

Archive the iCloud data https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204055

And move to external hard drive connected https://support.apple.com/en-in/guide/mac-help/mchl027f1d66/mac

Also , see some articles to reduce the data https://support.apple.com/en-in/HT204247
