I have done this several times. Apple mail by default makes the IMAP mail box. Unlike other mail apps they do not provide the choice between IMAP & POP directly.

Mail likes to default to IMAP.
You can trick mail into giving you more server options (POP) by giving it a bogus email address that does not resolve— this will trigger additional options as mail tries to sort it.
Thanks for the workaround. Sometimes Apple's zeal for simplicity backfires. Now I have a working POP email account endind in .nett!
