Just an update. BT has three settings for their accounts. Basic standard and premium. The account I was dealing with was assigned a basic level which does not support Apple email facility, the other two do. I changed the email to standard and it is resolved. Thanks for your interest.

Check your BT Mail account settings:
Settings > Mail > Accounts > [Your BT Mail Account] > [Account] > Advanced
If the Mail account settings are correct, but the problem remains, first try a forced-restart of the iPad:
If, after restart, the problem persists, the simplest route to resolution will likely be to remove the mail account from your iPad - then re-add the account using the Add Account wizard. No email messages will be lost - as, if using IMAP, all your email resides on the BT Mail server.
Thanks for that. When I select Mail then accounts I get the add account option which will not let me set up an email account because it says imap does not support password authentication. Cant get to the screen you show
It is odd. I followed your directions to the letter. There is no problem with email on web. BT says it’s all ok. Two factor authentication can’t be disabled. Apple support can’t help. I am mystified. Thanks for your help anyway.
If you are unable to access the settings for the account, force-restart the iPad as described.
It’s starting to look like those options changed with the latest iOS. You can’t switch two factor authentication off and BT server will not allow me to set up account while it’s on.
That’s odd. I’m unable to replicate your problem.
Have you force-restarted your iPad as previously directed?
