The operation couldn’t be completed. (OSStatus error 99999.)
I get this error when trying to open certain applications downloaded directly from their official website using different browsers to download it multiple times. I've tried various solutions found in these forums to no avail. Can anyone help with this issue?

So to follow up. I finally erased my SSD after backing up and reinstalled the operating system. SUCCESS!! I am no longer getting the error and was able to open the applications that were affected by it. Thanks you all your help!

Hope this worked. The only thing I have yet to do is reinstall the OS. Not really looking forward to that option if I can avoid it. Plus if I reinstall and then restore from a Time Machine Backup I'm concerned it will just reintroduce the same problem back in.
Removed everything from your post. I was able to boot into safe mode now, which I was unable to do before. But still not luck in getting the software to run without the Error 99999. Reran Etre and shared the log here.
Uninstall Sophos per their directions , then run etrecheck again to see what chaff it left...
On CMM.

Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at startup).
Safe mode attempts to repair Disks & clears lots of caches & loads safe Drivers, & prevents loading of 3rd party extensions, so if Safe Mode works try again in regular boot.
If that doesn't do it, we might find the problem with an etrecheck report.

Workable but harder for me to work with...the Note tool on the bottom of this editor's toolbar, as shown in the image, to copy and paste the output from EtreCheck. In a Reply before you click post, look for this to add longer texts...
Unfortunately I went through those steps and I'm still unable to launch the software. Some software I install works just fine while others do not get past this error. I don't know if I'm doing something wrong, but this has been a thorn in my side for some time now.
I forgot to answer you questions before I posted. I've been having this problem for probably over a year now. I've tried booting in safe mode as well to no avail.
Out of options? I will try reinstalling the OS some time soon.

Didn't do a full reinstall. But I did do a reinstall that doesn't delete my files. Still no luck. Maybe a full format/reinstall?
Well, I don't have a lot of hope for that, but not much else to try. :(
