iPod Classic -suddenly no volume

Had music from iPod Classic through car audio on journey and then stopped to buy something. On re-starting my journey the iPod tracks were being displayed on the car audio but there was no sound. I powered down the iPod but still no sound. On connecting the iPod to headphones and then a mini speaker if one listened carefully there was a faint whisper of the track showing on the iPod screen but no way of turning up the volume. The iPod is six and a half years old. Is there any easy fix?
