Macbook does not have newest update available

I bought my MacBook Pro in early 2014. I am trying to download Outlook with Word, Excel, Powerpoint etc., and it said my mac needs to be 10.13 or later. I did an update but the highest it would go is 10.10. What can I do? Is my computer just so outdated that it't not possible? I don't want to have to buy a whole new computer. And it is super important that I download this stuff for work.

In some cases, you may need to install 10.12 El Capitan as a waypoint. It installs a newer Mac App Store that can allow you to access later versions, if desired.

Okay so, someone told me to go to Apple support and download Catalina. So I did, and it updated, restarted and downloaded which was like three hours ago. Then it prompted me to sign in with my password and I did but it’s been loading for the past hour. I’m getting concerned I’m going to lose stuff on it. I have so many photos I didn’t even think to back them up before doing the update. :(
