Mac OS external drive format

what are the format options using Mac OS for external drives to be used with Mac and Windows?

MacBook Pro 15″, macOS 10.15

If you want to use the external drive for Windows and MacOS format it ExFat. Note that Time Machine will not work with ExFat.
