Iphone Frozen

What do I do if my phone is frozen and I cannot turn it off or open any apps? My phone is charging but I cannot open anything. If I get a FaceTime call, the screen just goes black. I turned off my phone by trying to hold down the side button and volume button and nothing is popping up on the screen for me to turn it off.
