Catalina 10.15.7 iMac (late 2012) shut down issues: resetting SMC and NVRAM does NOT solve the issue

I understand that I am one of many from searches but I have yet to see an answer that works. I upgraded (?) to Catalina 10.15.7 on my late 2012 27" iMac. Obviously I looked at the posts out there. Yes, I reset the SMC and NVRAM. Yes, I removed the external drive that had Time Machine on it. I use Carbon Copy Cloner anyway to backup as it is superior to Time Machine. These drive are off always and only on when I need to back up. Still the computer will not shut off or will shut off and reboot!🤬

I removed all older applications that do not function with OS 10.15.7. I do not understand why this issue cannot be solved by Apple. I just want to turn off my computer without holding down the power button or unplugging the computer.

PLEASE TELL ME SOMEONE HAS SOLVED THIS PROBLEM

Many thanks in advance. Be well and stay safe.

Signed,

Frustrated by this annoying issue 🤬

Hello again Calculus_Entropy,

Since the issue persists in another user account, the next best step would be to reinstall the macOS as the issue may be with the software itself. This process will not overwrite any data. It only overwrites the system files. That being said, it's still recommended to have a known good backup: Back up your Mac with Time Machine.

When you're ready, here's the instructions to reinstall the macOS: How to reinstall macOS

If after reinstalling macOS, you're still experiencing the same issue, reach out for additional assistance here: Get Support.

Cheers.

Hi there Calculus_Entropy,

From what we can tell, you're unable to power off your iMac by choosing Apple menu () > Shutdown, and you must power it off manually. We're glad you're here, and we can help.

To start, let's boot your iMac into safe mode to see if the issue persists there. "Safe mode prevents your Mac from loading certain software as it starts up, including login items, system extensions not required by macOS, and fonts not installed by macOS. It also does a basic check of your startup disk, similar to using First Aid in Disk Utility. And it deletes some system caches, including font caches and the kernel cache, which are automatically created again as needed. Safe mode is particularly useful when you're trying to resolve an issue that doesn't seem to be associated with using any particular app." Check out the support article below to learn how to boot your iMac in to safe mode, and test for the issue there:

How to use safe mode on your Mac

After testing the issue in safe mode, try restarting your iMac to boot up normally again. Let us know how it goes. Cheers.

Hi again Calculus_Entropy,

It sounds like the issue with your Mac not shutting down as expected the first time persists even after booting in safe mode. We appreciate you taking the time to clarify the issue for us, and we'd like to try a few more troubleshooting steps to see if we can get this sorted out. Next, let's see if the issue persists in another user account. To find out how to create a new user account to test for this behavior, follow the steps in this link:

Set up users, guests, and groups on Mac

We hope this helps. Let us know your results. Take care.

SO NO FURTHER HELP?!?!?!

Here is the last "report" sent to Apple in hopes that they can update the OS 10.15.7 to allow an iMac to be shutdown once and not have to shut it down twice. Come on Apple, you are better than this. Any help is appreciated. Seriously, any help. I am not the only one with this issue. Just do a search!

As mentioned, starting in safe mode did not solve any of the issues with Catalina and shutting down my iMac. I am still unable to power off my iMac by choosing Apple menu () > Shutdown. I get to wait and come back to find it rebooted once again and then I can click the "Shutdown" icon on the menu of users. Very annoying. I know I am not the only one with this issue.
