wifi on iphone 10 only working in airplane mode

my iphone 10 does not show the wifi symbol despite it being turned on and appearing to be connected to my wifi service. All other apple products in home are fine. When I turn on airplane mode i can still use the wifi service and browse/use apps (as I would expect), however when I turn off airplane mode it appears to default to 4G cellular service despite wifi being on and preference. I have tried all the usual hacks, restart, reset of network settings etc. Can anyone please help?

I have resolved this problem. VPN was causing problems due to a lockdown app.
