Doesn't happen with anyone else. This function has always worked in iPhoto and Photos but now it will crash with this specific person which worked before. I tried the repair function which did nothing.

Is the system version below your question still valid "macOS 10.12"? After the Sierra upgrade I had also a few Photos crashes, because the album of a person became corrupted. The reason seemed to be automatically detected faces of strangers in the background or artefacts, that were no faces. Had rejected many of automatically detected faces as irrelevant, and these resulted in white thumbnails. And some of them made Photos crash, when they appeared in the album of a person.
When I could no longer open there album of a person without creating a crash, it only helped to delete the album of the person completely, and then to recreate it with a different name for the person - I had to use a slightly modified name, for example a nickname.
The upgrade to High Sierra fixed the crashes finally, because it rebuild the faces database.

As a test launch Photos with the Option key held down and create a new, test library. Import some Photos with that person in them and test to see if the same problem persists. Does it? (This tells us if the problem is limited to your current library or is more wide spread). Then close and open your current library and test again.
Log into another vanilla admin user account, Set up users, guests, and groups on Mac, and repeat the test above to see if the problem persists. (This tells us if the problem is limited to your user account or is system wide).

Yes it's 10.12.6. I've had success in the past with this person in adding/recognizing faces but now kaboom. I've had the white thumbnail problem occasionally on a doctored photo but then it snaps in. Could be an issue with the photos database.
I can't upgrade on this computer to 10.13 because of a few programs I need.
I'm not using an album for this person this is under the "people" tab. I've tried the repair function in opening photos but no cigar.
Safemode made no difference. I will try a directory repair with Diskwarrior and see what happens. I really want to avoid reinstalling the OS. Thanks for the reply.
That's a good suggestion I'll give it a try. I must admit the size of my library (on a different internal drive) is quite large.
Before resorting to DiskWarrior I'd boot into the Recovery volume (boot with the Command + R keys held down), select Disk Utility and run Disk First Aid on the drive. If you get any errors rerun DFA until there's no error message. Then reboot normally.
