Download the latest IOS that will still allow me to use

What is the latest Operating system for imac that will still allow me to access iphoto? I currently have 10.10.5 (yosemite) and have been concerned about up-grading the operating system for fear of losing access to iphoto. The way mac stores pictures on photos is way too cumbersome for the type of work I do. Creating events is a much more productive for me in that often an activity will take place over several months. By creating an event, photos are easy to find, as opposed to searching through a field of photos scattered by dates. Unfortunately, I needed to replace my wireless keyboard with the new magic keyboard, and some of its functionality has been lost.

The latest OS that will allow iPhoto to run is OS10.14 Mojave.

Trying to stick with iPhoto is a dead-end proposition though, and the one thing sure is that the next Mac you get will not run it. So, on way or another you'll be leaving iPhoto at some point. Easier to do it now, while it still runs, than later when it doesn't.

As for Events... just make an Album instead. Or a date based Smart Album.

And also remember, that using iPhoto or Photos is not compulsory, you can also use any 3rd party app you prefer.

Be aware that iPhoto Events are converted into Album with the same name as the Events. So you can consider albums to the the new events.

Also any import from the iPhone or other source can be put directly into an existing album or a new album:

Photos is much more powerful in organizing and editing than iPhoto ever was.

The next challenge is how do migrate events from iPhoto to photo? When I first got the new iMac, the migration was more or less automatic when setting up photo. But after set up, nothing seems to migrate. I also noted that individual ID's of the pictures in iPhoto disappear when migrated to photo. I still don't see anything about the photo storage system that is an improvement over iPhoto. To me its like dumping a bunch of photos in a wastebasket then trying to sort them out. what am I missing?
