CarPlay and Subaru Bluetooth

My iPhone 11 used to pair with my Subaru BT even when connected to CarPlay via UBS cable. When I received or placed a call, it would connect to my Subaru BT (2018 Outback). For the last few months, I can't use the phone handsfree when I'm connected to CarPlay...if someone calls me, it will ring over the BT but as soon as I try to answer, it disconnects from BT and I need to use my phone's speaker. This is a cumbersome distraction and dangerous. I've seen similar threads where people have said you can't use CarPlay and Bluetooth but I'm pretty sure it used to work just fine (though I'm a relatively new user of CarPlay).

Has something recently changed? If so, how do I get my phone to work again with CarPlay?
