Received this warning 2 days ago.
Moved about 70Gb of files onto external hard drive.
Have been checking free disk space on main HD (capacity 250Gb) since and has fallen every day.
Last night 20Gb free. This morning 14Mb free.
Please advise.

When I have problems like this, the best approach is to:
This will, slow, start showing how much space is in use by each directory. You can click the ">" on the left side to show sub-directories. Ignore System and Library directories.
With this information in hands, you can identify where the space of your Volumes is gone.
Remember that Documents is a link to iCloud. The space used by it can be adjusted to offload files if necessary.

I have now checked the folders and by far the largest is:
Library folder - Recovered Messages (Hotmail).mbox 90.93 GB
What can I do with this?
Also, I still can't understand why the free space has kept reducing even after moving files to external storage!

Seems that the Apple Mail program is downloading a log of messages from your Hotmail account.
Assuming this is a new behaviour., you need to check if you had received some message with a large attachment on it.
PS: Ignore my comment about iCloud. Snow Leopard is not using it yet.

I decided to try and reduce the recovered messages and found this https://www.cnet.com/news/fix-os-x-mail-creating-multiple-recovered-messages/
I've followed the instructions and after restarting Mail (all was ok) deleted the recovered messages - 100GB+ data.
Now, have 101.75 GB free....Will see if this remains stable.
