Can I have Physical SIM in iphone and ESIM in apple watch ?

Can I have Physical SIM in iPhone and ESIM in apple watch ? Or is compulsory to have ESIMs in both devices ?

The cellular version of the watch has an inbuilt Esim which uses the phone number from your physical simcard in the phone.
