iTunes is Randomly Reordering Album Artist Names

Hello

For some unknown reason, iTunes is randomly resorting/reordering some, but not all, albums in my music library. There is no pattern to what albums/artists get resorted.

It started recently and I cannot track it down to any specific update. I'm using Windows 10 and iTunes is 12.10.2.3.

I am extremely meticulous when I add albums to the library about making sure that both my "Artist" and "Album Artist" are by Last Name > First Name

For example, I will open iTunes and the "Album Artist" will be changed to First Name > Last Name.

Dylan Bob will be changed and moved to Bob Dylan.

It is the "Album Artist" that is getting changed. The "Artist" does not change.

I also have seen a problem where only a few certain tracks from one specific album (purchased from the iTunes store) will get reordered to First Name > Last Night. But, it does not happen every time I open the library.

Thanks for any troubleshooting tips

Andrew

  1. Noted.
  2. So not principally store content then. For non-purchased content, particularly mp3s, another possible cause would be multiple tags. See Repair security permissions for iTunes for Windows - Apple Community.
  3. As noted for store content that exhibits this behaviour hide from your purchase history. See Hide and unhide music, movies, TV shows, audiobooks, and books - Apple Support for how to do this.
  4. Sometimes iTunes needs to be closed and opened again for it to redo its sort orders.
  5. Such issues are generally not dependent on Windows updates
  6. I don't think indicates any particular underlying issue with the computer. I think it is more an iTunes quirk with metadata in certain circumstances that you should be able to workaround by either cleaning your tags or by hiding certain purchases.

Do you subscribe to either Apple Music or iTunes Match? Is this behaviour limited to purchased content? iTunes has a feature that allows it to include your unhidden purchase history in the library, even if not currently downloaded to it. I've seen a few threads over time where it seems that iTunes refreshes its view of your purchase history, and then matches any locally downloaded content up with it, reasserting the store metadata. The easiest way to prevent this is to hide affected items from your purchase history before setting the metadata back exactly the way that you want it.

If a significant number of tracks are affected I have a script called ExportImport that you might be able to use to export the correct details from an old Previous iTunes Library, then apply them to the current one. It would probably need customising to limit export and import to the fields you're having an issue with, i.e. Artist and Album Artist, along with Sort Artist and Sort Album Artist for completeness.

Thank you for your helpful reply. To answer your questions and try to figure this out.

1) I do not subscribe to Apple Music or iTunes Match or use iCloud for streaming purchases. I am very old school - open iTunes and select music to play

2) From what I see, the albums that have been resorted are albums that I have downloaded from other sources and I added to my iTunes library.

I keep all my music in one folder on my D Drive. As I said, I am very meticulous about making sure both my Artist and Artist Names are Last Name > First Name. I do this through iTunes directly when adding music, not in the folder on my D Drive.

These resorted albums have been in my library for significant periods of time, so it is not recent downloads/library additions. it is random albums that seem to get resorted. Not an entire artists' worth of albums (ex. not all the Bruce Springsteen albums get resorted, only some).

After I resort them correctly to Last Name > First Name they are seeming to stay put in the correct place (but I need to verify this more).

3) I do have 2 instances from official iTunes Store purchased albums where some/but not all songs are resorted by first name.

These albums are Bob Dylan (Side Tracks) and John Prine (first album) where only some songs in each album will resort to First Name > Last Name - even after I have repeatedly set them Last Name > First Name in the Album Info window.

But, they are not resorted every time I open iTunes. Sometimes I open iTunes and they are in their correct place; sometimes not.

4) Yesterday, I had one album that had resorted itself. I tried to change the name to its proper place and the album would not move. I opened up iTunes this morning and it is in its correct place Last Name > First Name

5) I also updated iTunes for Windows to the current version yesterday (but I still have the problem). I think there was a recent Windows update, but I am not sure when that was.

6) It is not a lot of albums that are getting resorted. Only a few, but it is frustrating and makes me wonder if a larger problem is around the corner.

Thank you again

Andrew
