iPhone read receipts are off but still showing

My Read Receipts have ALWAYS been turned off. Recently someone alerted me that they can see when I read their texts (as if Read Receipts are on). I went into Settings> Messages and the Read Receipts are off. They are also off for that individual contact yet they can still see them. I have the IPhone 11 Pro Max and all software is up to date.

why is this happening and how do I fix it?

Hey there Casandra,

Let's team up and take a closer look together. We certainly expect the Read Receipts to not show as you've disabled that option, so let's start ruling out some possible causes:

You mentioned updating recently, but the latest is iOS 14.1. If this isn't the version installed currently, check out: Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
If this is only occurring with that one contact, have you already tired to Restart your iPhone?
If this is only occurring with that one contact, have you already saved their information, then deleted/added them back to your iPhone?

I have an IPhone 8 and have the latest IOS update 14.1. It’s doing the same thing. Read receipts is toggled off in settings and for an individual. In fact, never used it. Now all of sudden it’s working, but it’s turned off everywhere. I’ve restarted my phone several times and it’s still doing it.
