After updating the system, the screen for updating comes reappears. No updating has taken place.

Thanks BDAqua! I thought this worked but this afternoon I see it still hasn't so, it's time to empty a LOT of photos... Maybe there's not enough storage space. It's nice having those photos on my iMac so I don't have to go to outside storage to look through & enjoy.

Restart in Safe Mode ( SHIFT Key ) immediately at Startup.
What update were you trying to install, some information would have been nice.
Trying to install macOS Catalina 10.15.7 on a MacBook Air. I currently have Catalina 10.15.6

You sound SO experienced with good advice that you're the first person in Apple Support I"m "Following"
Safe mode attempts to repair Disks & clears lots of caches & loads safe Drivers, & prevents loading of 3rd party extensions, so if Safe Mode works try again in regular boot.
I'd get a good external drive, backups are always good...
