Recent Items in Finder are not recent
Those items are alphabetically sorted, not chronologically
So I wonder how to sort them chronologically?
Show View Options (cmd-j). Or, use the toolbar group/sort button.

I don't believe you can change it.
Mine works that way. By default, it should be sorted by Date Last Opened.
FWIW, I believe the reference is to "Recent Items" in the Apple menu, not "Recent Items" in the Finder sidebar.
