Hey there! I’ve seen this after the update as well, I think HP drivers are out of date and need to be updated to work. Here’s what worked:

First, if updating the software manually doesn’t work:

Open Finder, on the top menu hit Go > Computer > Macintosh HD (Usually) > Library > Printers.

Save (If you need to, and Delete the HP folder from there, (You’ll notice when clicking “Show in Finder” when you get the errors, these are where the files are, in this case old, outdated drivers and files).

Once deleted, open System Preferences > Printers and Scanners.

Right click (or Control click) select “Reset Printing System”, (This will delete any existing Printers and Scanners).

Once done:

If USB Printer, dis connect/re connect, you may see the option to “Install” the new HP software.

If a wireless “AirPrinter”, just hit the “+” sign to re-add the printer and select “Add”.

Do a test print to make sure it’s working again!

This is Gatekeeper, Mac’s security doing its job, most likely if you’re getting that error message, it’s a good thing to remove the older software.

Hope it all goes well!

From previous comments in this thread, it appears that the security certificate from HP for our printers has expired and Apple software is preventing it from working. It was also suggested that HP has no interest in updating their certificates for Catalina because the printers are "older" Ha. Mine is about 2 years old. While this is bad form on the part of HP and we should certainly tell them so on their feedback site, the only solution right now is to set your printer to be a "Generic" printer using your IP address. On the printer screen, if you touch the the little wireless icon in the top right corner, you will get the IP address of the printer and you can manually ADD that generic printer in System Preferences. I used the instructions here: https://nordvpn.com/blog/how-to-find-printer-ip-address/ (I used method #4) Printer is printing.

So I reset all my printers by following this procedure.

Click the Apple menu, and then click System Preferences. Click Printers & Scanners, Print & Scan, or Print & Fax. Right-click (or Control + click) anywhere inside the Printers window, and then click Reset printing system. Click Reset or OK

Then i went to the HP website and downloaded the recommended SMART HP software see link below and followed the instructions to reset up the HP printer. I seemed to work for me.

The solution that worked for me, steps:

  1. Download any latest software update from Apple System Preferences.
  2. Download the HP Easy Start. Don't install any printers yet. Use it for step 3.
  3. Delete any printers (with the HP Easy Start) and reset the printing system from the System Preferences (Printers and Scanners).
  4. Make sure there isn't any HP folder on your system, empty trash.
  5. Reboot.
  6. Run the HP Easy Start (to install printers, step 7).
  7. Search for the printer with IP (my HP is on network).
  8. Let it download and install drivers and HP utility.
  9. Add the printer to the printers and scanners (This set is done through the HP easy Start, not manually).
  10. Quit HP Easy Start.
  11. Enjoy printer with a coffee.

After 4 days of trying, I finally discovered a fix. This is in regards to the horrific snafu between HP & Apple resulting in HP printers being unable to print with macOS Catalina or Mohave. If you have an old HP printer the following might help you.

I've tried all the fixes I could find for the last 4 days on many message boards and could not get a fix to work until today. This took about 6 hours of trial and error. I have a 12 yr old Color LaserJet 3600 and a 10 yr old PhotoSmart Premium multi-machine. I run a MacBookPro with Catalina 10.15.7.

Most fixes for old printers talked about deleting the printer in System Preferences/Printers & Scanners, then deleting the HP files in Library/Printers, rebooting, then downloading the HP Drivers Pkg 5.1 and then re-installing the printer thru System Preferences/Printers & Scanners. I tried multiple versions of that scenario and nothing worked.

My last idea before I gave up entirely worked. Here's what I did:

Try to print something again and when one of those annoying error boxes ("xxxx.xx will damage your computer") comes up, you have two choices -- "Show in Finder" or "OK". Choose "Show in Finder".

That will take you to a hidden part of the Library which will show you that file inside a hidden HP folder.

Now with that Finder window still open, I went back to System Preferences/Printers & Scanners and deleted both HP printers.

THEN I went back to the open Finder folder to DELETE THE ENTIRE "hidden" HP FOLDER. That's the key. (Every time I tried it before I simply went to Library/Printers and there was only a single file to delete for each printer.

Once I had that entire hidden folder deleted -- the rest was easy.

Reboot again just to make sure everything comes up clean.

Open System Preferences/Printers & Scanner and wait a bit. Both my printers appeared on their own. (They were both attached via USB.)

When I tried to print to the first printer I was encouraged that no pop-up errors came up. However a dialog box did appear which asked if I wanted to download drivers direct from Apple. Definitely YES.

It took a minute for those to download.

Then I had to click on the printer icon in the task bar because it couldn't print without the new drivers. (I might have this part backwards because it's done now and I don't want to recreate the entire scenario. Maybe you have to click on the printer icon first to see the message asking if you want to download drivers direct from Apple. One way or another, it worked. You need the drivers direct from Apple.)

This snafu between HP and Apple is a nightmare scenario for HP users around the globe. I called HP support this morning and got no help from a very nice rep who basically said printers that old weren't worth the effort. I was ready to give up after that phone call, but that's when I had that one more idea about wondering where that "Show in Finder" choice took me.

Once I had my first printer running, I just had to reinstall the 2nd printer in System Preferences/Printers & Scanners and go through the same process to download drivers directly from Apple.

Good luck to everyone who is still struggling with this.

It appears as if Apple wants us all to use their Air Print set up rather than the HP drivers or at least thats what I have learned through multiple calls tp HP tech support and online research. When I downloaded the above mentioned latest HP drivers I got multiple pop ups of possible malware issues, and it didn't work for me. I have an Office Jet Pro 8710 and Imac with Catalina 10.15.7. I deleted the printer from System preferences then hit the + button and reinstalled it using Air-Print from the drop down menu. It is working perfectly now but the HP utility no longer works and Image capture no longer recognizes the printer. In System Preferences-Printers and Scanners I can check supply status but I can not use the scan feature as it doesn't connect with the printer. I can scan using the screen on the printer but only as a copy. I can no longer scan to my computer which I need to do frequently. It will allow me to scan to a usb device. I used a USB flash drive and scanned to it then uploaded the file from the flash drive to my computer. A whole lot of lost time because of this latest change from Apple. I hope they find a solution soon.

I have a HP Color Laserjet Printer (CP 2025) that no longer was working with the new MacOS Catalina 10.15.7 operating system. I was getting warnings that the files would harm my system. After speaking with HP Support there is a work around for the problem. Under System Preferences|Printers & Scanners, delete the HP printer. Then re-install the printer using "Generic Postscript Printer" under the "USE" menu. If any warnings pop up in the process, select Locate in Finder and delete the file(s).

HP States that they are working on the problem and should get it fixed in a few weeks.

Yes. When the warning box pops up, select "locate in finder" and delete the file(s). Go into "System Preferences", then "Printers & Scanners", select your HP printer, hit the minus sign (-) at the bottom, and select "Delete Printer". Then select the plus sign (+) and select your HP printer, it will list the name of the printer below in the "Name" box". Click on the arrow on the "Use" box and select "Generic Postscript Printer" or "Generic Printer" and select "Add". The printer should now work.

TennisAnnie,

From the menu bar, go to  > System Preferences > Printers & Scanners. Control-click in the sidebar that lists your printers. Choose to “Reset printing system…” then confirm you want to “Reset” in the pop-up.

Resetting the printing systems removes all your printers and scanners as well as clearing various behind-the-scenes files. Reconnect your printer afterward, as you did in the previous step.

Hope this helps you!
