Follow these steps if you’ve got this problem with macOS Catalina

Step 1. Reset the printing systems in macOS Catalina

It’s very easy to reset the printing systems in macOS, and doing so can resolve all manner of printing problems on your Mac. If your printer still doesn’t work, this might be the solution you need to use to fix it.

From the menu bar, go to  > System Preferences > Printers & Scanners. Control-click in the sidebar that lists your printers. Choose to “Reset printing system…” then confirm you want to “Reset” in the pop-up.

Resetting the printing systems removes all your printers and scanners as well as clearing various behind-the-scenes files. Reconnect your printer afterward, as you did in the previous step.

Step 2. Remove the printer settings from your Library

The Library folder is used to store system files, preferences, and users’ information.

Your Mac stores all manner of system files, preferences, and other settings in a hidden folder called the Library. When an app misbehaves, sometimes it’s because these files are corrupt.

You can usually fix this by removing the relevant files, forcing macOS to recreate them. However, you need to be cautious before removing anything from your Library. These files can affect the way your macOS works.

Make sure you only touch the files in the folder listed below. And don’t move anything to the Trash until you’re certain your Mac is still working.

How do I remove the printer settings from my Mac’s Library?

  1. Open Finder, select Go > Go to Folder.
  2. Type: /Library/Printers/ and hit enter.
  3. Create a new folder called “Printers Content” and move everything from the Printers folder inside it. Now drag that folder to your Desktop.
  4. Reconnect your printer and try printing again:
    1. If it works: Move the “Printers Content” folder to the Trash.
    2. If it doesn’t work: Return the “Printers Content” folder to the Printers folder and empty it.

Did these steps fix your printer problems on macOS Catalina? Let us know in the comments what did or didn’t work for you! And be sure to contact Apple Support directly for one-to-one technical support if you need more help.

I have downloaded the latest drivers etc for the printer. It stumbled a few on times on install saying

“HPDM.framework” will damage your computer.

I clicked report the box to report to apple and hit return - it carried on installing

Now it does print, but before every print I get a pop up box that says

“HPDM.framework” will damage your computer.

If I hit OK the only real option, then it prints the page.

Does anyone have a clue about what is happening - do I have a Malware attack?

I can't print from any of my Macs to my network printers this AM (HP and Xerox). I can print from my iphone. I can ping and access the printer from a browser.

I think the silent updates from last night hosed printing. You can see several printer issues crop up over night in the forums (printers that works now don't, "software name" will damage your computer, network printing that won't work).

I expect more posts to follow today. I've been in IT my whole working career. I've been through the standard checks. Apple needs to fix this.

The following response is on HP Community board

I've spent hours on this issue. It appears that the HP Drivers do not work with Catalina 10.15.7. Their driver package security certificate has expired and the code sign is out of date for HP Utility. Until HP issues an updated driver, which they may not do because it mostly affects older printers, you can either try to go back to an earlier version of Catalina or buy a new printer.

I know that if I'm going to buy another printer, it won't be an HP nor a Samsung.

my printer is not that old!

Hey there! I’ve seen this after the update as well, I think HP drivers are out of date and need to be updated to work. Here’s what worked:

First, if updating the software manually doesn’t work:

Open Finder, on the top menu hit Go > Computer > Macintosh HD (Usually) > Library > Printers.

Save (If you need to, and Delete the HP folder from there, (You’ll notice when clicking “Show in Finder” when you get the errors, these are where the files are, in this case old, outdated drivers and files).

Once deleted, open System Preferences > Printers and Scanners.

Right click (or Control click) select “Reset Printing System”, (This will delete any existing Printers and Scanners).

Once done:

If USB Printer, dis connect/re connect, you may see the option to “Install” the new HP software.

If a wireless “AirPrinter”, just hit the “+” sign to re-add the printer and select “Add”.

Do a test print to make sure it’s working again!

This is Gatekeeper, Mac’s security doing its job, most likely if you’re getting that error message, it’s a good thing to remove the older software.

Hope it all goes well!

I just had an online Chat with Apple Support. They told me to reset my printer system:

System Preferences

Printers & Scanners

Hold Control key while on list of printers and click "Reset printing system."

This will delete all your printers.

Then re-install your printer. Here's an article with instructions:

https://support.apple.com/guide/mac-help/add-a-printer-on-mac-mh14004/10.15/mac/10.15

I did this and now I can print. I still get the annoying error message, but once I click OK, my document prints.

It was a little disconcerting that the person I chatted with had not heard of this problem. Seems major to me.

Good night and good luck, everyone!

So I reset all my printers by following this procedure.

Click the Apple menu, and then click System Preferences. Click Printers & Scanners, Print & Scan, or Print & Fax. Right-click (or Control + click) anywhere inside the Printers window, and then click Reset printing system. Click Reset or OK

Then i went to the HP website and downloaded the recommended SMART HP software see link below and followed the instructions to reset up the HP printer. I seemed to work for me.

Downloading the HP Printer Drivers v5.1 for OS X as mentioned in the thread solved the problem for me not being able to scan with my HP 6700 all in one. And I stated at the beginning of the thread, the malware message would come up for "HP Scanner 3" and this download fixed that.

Totally stupid this should suddenly be broken for all of us.
