How do I leave my iMac on to access home sharing?

Is home sharing with Apple TV only available if my iMac is awake? Does this mean that I need to keep the iMac on and awake all of the time? Should I turn off sleep mode? Does it damage the display to remain on continuously?

Yes.

If you want to be able to access Home Sharing content, yes.

Does it damage the display to remain on continuously?

Yes, but you should be able to put the display to sleep without putting the whole machine to sleep.
