itunes not detecting iphone 12

Hey guys, just got my iphone 12 (previous phone was iphone 8), but itunes is not detecting the iphone 12. I'm trying to transfer all the data, texts etc from the iphone 8 to 12 but whenever I connect the 12 to my windows PC it just doesn't detect in itunes. My PC detects it - I can see it in my files and it is in device manager, but itunes just doesn't recognise it. itunes is up to date with the latest version and it still detects my iphone 8 when I plug that in. I tried power cycling the phone and even uninstalling/re-installing itunes but no luck .. tried it in different USB ports as well which is the only thing which makes a slight difference. In one USB port its like it detects it for a brief moment then its gone, all other ports it never appears in itunes. But all my USB ports work perfectly fine with all other devices.

So I was hoping people may have any advice? Cheers :)

I have a few other lightning cables (mostly Apple branded) but my computer does not have a USB-C port on it. However, I was finally able to get it to work after connecting an Apple brand USB-A to Lightning cable directly to a USB 3.1 port on the back of my computer (directly connected to the motherboard). All other ports did not work, even though device manager was detecting the iPhone correctly and following the various reinstall recommendations did not work. Only the USB 3 port worked properly and I didn't have to restart everything - though of course in all my troubleshooting i did a number of restarts and reinstalls so it can't hurt if you restart your computer or iTunes as well.

Just for background, I've got an iPhone 12 Mini on iOS 14.3. The computer I'm trying to sync to is an AMD Ryzen 3 (Gigabyte B450M motherboard) running Windows 10 (with the latest Dec 2020 patches). I do not have a USB-C port on the computer anywhere, so the included cable is not particularly useful at the moment. Thanks for the discussion which helped me narrow down some things to try.

@thepokey No I'm not on beta iOS. I eventually gave up with my main PC and just using my secondary PC. I'm using iCloud as well as local backup with iTunes now. I only use iTunes primarily to sync my library so it was annoying when I couldn't do that with my main PC.

@jlipscomb121 Thanks for chiming in. I did think it could be due to the cable as well but it's just strange that my secondary PC detects it and works just fine with the same USB-A to lightning cable. Just a glitch with my main PC I suppose.

It's strange that only the 3 of us had issues or are the only ones reporting them.

@prosteak Hi there, yeah it's real weird. iTunes will detect my iPhone 12 but only if I use the old USB. Still trying to figure out if this USB C will do anything other than charge my phone. I see we're all experiencing some sort of issue in relation to the 12.

Unfortunately most of the time you call a 'helpdesk' you get the frontline who generally just read from a script. Which is fair enough because a lot of people aren't tech savvy. But it would be great if there was an escalation process that didn't require physically bringing the phone in. I'm nowhere near an Apple store personally and as you said you haven't had issues with other cords.

Not sure if I've mentioned this already but I'm not yet using my USB-C cord because I don't have an adapter.

Would unplugging / re-plugging it in that many times affect the battery life at all? I thought I looked after my XS quite well but the battery life slipped below 85% which decreases the resale value by a bit.

It's the exact same issue for me. I got the new iphone 12 and itunes does not see it. WIN 10 doesn't see it either. Itunes is up to date, I've tried multiple wires and WIN 10 is also up to date. iTunes sees my old ipad and my wife's iphone 7plus. This is on my home built system which had no issues with my old iphone 7plus and my new surface laptop sees it no problem. I checked the Device manager and the apple driver appears in the portable devices area and also I have the Apple Mobile Device USE Device showing up in the USB devices area as well. YO APPLE!!!!! Help us out here!!!

Hi all. I stopped troubleshooting with different cables, adapters, re-installing Windows as I was spending too much time trying to figure out how to get iTunes to detect my phone. But it appears more and more people are experiencing this issue and it's not limited to AMD systems. Did we all hit the lottery and get the few iPhones out of the millions that have connection issues? Apple needs to get involved.

They probably have no clue how to fix it so they aren’t engaged. I see some folks got it to work, I’m glad it’s resolved for you guys. My issue remains, I can charge my iPhone 12 and it is detectable by both windows and iTunes if I use the normal USB cable we’ve been using. The lightening to USB-C cable still only charges the phone and remains undetected by the computer itself and iTunes. I’m just ready to get an adapter and call it a day. The fact that it doesn’t work isn’t what bothers me most, it’s the fact that Apple actually said we could sync files and things with this aside from charging, and probably knew if we used anything other than a MacBook we’d run into issues. This is why I’m usually all things Apple, but we should be able to use whatever computer we want and get the same results.
