As indicated in the linked support document, the Apple TV (3rd generation) that works with the Apple Remote (aluminum), needs Menu+Left, then Menu+Right.

[Menu+Volume Up is for the Siri Remote, and the Siri Remote doesn’t work with Apple TV (3rd generation).]

If you don’t know anyone to borrow a compatible remote from, then borrowing is not an option. It could be the fastest option, though.

To restore without accessing the Settings, you will need a computer. That can be a Mac with macOS Catalina (using Finder), or a Mac with Mojave or earlier (using iTunes), or a Windows computer (using iTunes). If you can't restore your Apple TV yourself, then take your Apple TV to an Apple Retail Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider for more help.
