Volume under "sound and haptics" keeps going to zero

iPhone XR, ios 14 - The volume on my iPhone XR (normally set on maximum level) keeps lowering on its own all the way down to zero. Pressing the 'volume up' button on the side of the phone shows the volume at max, but when viewed in 'settings/sound and haptics' it shows all the way down. I can then raise it all the way up again in 'sound and haptics, but at some point it goes down to zero again (even though the side volume buttons show the volume at max. In 'settings/sound and haptics' I keep the 'change with buttons' function turned off. This happens on a daily basis. I discover the issue when I miss calls or texts.

Hi rexsard,

Thanks for posting. We see your volume is changing unexpectedly! That's definitely something we'd be looking into as well, and are glad to help.

First, are you running iOS 14.1? If not, here's How to back up your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch and Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.

If that doesn't help, test by removing any cases or protectors. Does that make a difference?

Also, have you checked to see if this might be explained by Attention Aware features? You can test turning that off under Settings > Face ID & Passcode: About Attention Aware features on your iPhone X or iPad Pro

Let us know if this makes a difference.

Take care.

I have the same issue on the iPhone XR that is causing me to miss call and texts. I’m running iOS 14.1, “Attention Aware” is turned off and “change [ringer] with buttons” is turned off (with buttons I can only change the multimedia volume, not ringer volume). The cover I’m using is not the source of the problem, since “change with buttons” is disabled. And you can bet I’ve checked that the physical mute switch is off too. This problem is relative to the Settings menu. Ten minutes ago it happened again and I went to “Sound and Haptics”. The ringer volume slide should have been halfway, instead it was to zero. I blocked the phone and unblocked again, without changing page, and then under my eyes the volume slide went back to 50% as it should be. It’s like the iPhone is unable to load the volume settings from memory.

Okay i've done some research and come to the conclusion that this isn't a bug,

this is a feature, that CANNOT be turned off.

the problem we're having is that it isn't configured properly for older devices, it views our car bluetooth as a pair of headphones, then listens to the sound coming out, and then adjust thinking the sound is WAY to loud, because obviously they're not actually headphones.

Apple needs to fix this problem asap, preferably BEFORE someone gets into a car accident because of this oversight.

I have the same problem, it reduces volume on bluetooth connected devices.

Note this induces dangerous and illegal situations as it turns down the volume on the headset for the motorbike and the bluetooth connection of the car, reducing the volume so far nothing can be heard and having to take the hand of the handle bars or steering wheel to manually turn the volume up again. Which creates possible dangerous situations and is illegal in a lot of countries.

So make it possible to turn this off for a chosen bluetooth connection or to be able to turn this off completely.

The iOS update is why everyone’s phone is messed up! Sounds & Haptics automatically turns the volume down and there’s no way to disable it! Driving using your phones navigation, “man the directions haven’t said anything” you know why the directions didn’t tell me to turn? Because headphone safety on sounds and haptics doesn’t know the difference between a car stereo, headphones, AirPods, earbuds, or a home audio system so it changed the volume. How about removing the bs sounds and haptics volume control feature and let the user decide if the volume should be turned up while oh driving my car. It’s also illegal to have your phone in your hand while driving, what’s Apple do, put a forced “safety” feature on the phones that’s going to force users to have screw with their phones every 15 minutes to turn the volume back up so they can hear maps, music, handless phone calls, and everything else this very stupid forced safety feature causes.

This has all been done you cannot it off . Apple said they were addressing this problem with the next software update 14.03 it is worse now and it definitely is not only air pods it is in car in home it is ridiculous you pay £800 for a phone and pay Apple Music and they turn sound down 4 times a today .

I mean by don’t Apple address it !!

This is driving me crazy. I’ve had apple phones for many years but if this isn’t sorted in the next patch I’m getting rid and going over to the dark side. It annoys me that much. It happens two or three times every gym session and it’s such a pain. Apple you need to be on this and changing tact, or you’ll lose a lot of customers. I’ll also be cancelling Apple Music too, along with many others.

I am extremely fed up with this as I have posted so many times . Previously I said it does not happen on my iPad same music same headphones but no enforced volume turn down ! Let’s hope we get a sensible answer from Apple and not that it is an European excuse ! Otherwise it would happen on all devices . Today at home no music on nothing and I get this message don’t get it they turn it down when volume is not on lol

It’s not a feature. It’s an inconvenience. It’s a nuisance. It’s a danger in some circumstances. It’s an intrusion into your habits on a device you should have control of. The fact that they wish to have this level of control on a device that YOU own is very telling about the company. The one thing I would never call it is a feature.

This is becoming ridiculous. this has reached the point of possibly using a different phone. This is truly sad considering I have just purchased an Iphone 12. This happens at some times every 15 minutes. When you Dj at work and love your music through out your house it becomes very annoying to constantly reach for your phone due to an auto volume in such an expensive piece of equipment.
