I signed out of iCloud and signed back in. But, my documents are lost. There was no backup of the documents. Please help!

I made the huge mistake of not checking iCloud Drive before signing out :( I just checked after signing out and signing back in, but the file isn't there. And it's not on my iPhone. So, not sure where exactly it was stored :(
If the documents were stored in iCloud Drive (Files), try going to iCloud.com via a computer browser to see if they are there first.
It sounds like the file in question is irrevocably gone.
No backup documents lost after signing out and in.
