Please read the 10 pages of the thread you posted to. The problem has more than one cause and more than one fix; some causes are software, some are hardware, and some are usage issues.

But at the very least update to iOS 14.2.1, which is supposed to fix the software issue.

I have got the same problem, what I have found to be the issue for me is that when using speaker I hold my pinky on the bottom on the phone which has to be where the mic is because as soon as I remove my finger the mic works.

Think this is pretty bad from a design perspective, a lot like the antenna problem with previous iPhones for certain hand positions...

Yesterday after 7 hours with apple on messaged, they really ran a system diagnostic. The hardware is broken that leads to the microphone, they were like you can get it fixed, I’m like no I’m not wasting my money to fix it. I’m in the 14 day warranty, I am trading it

I have an iPhone 12 with the latest IOS version and I'm having one of the issues that have been mentioned on this thread.

My microphone doesn't work when I try to record a voice memo, send an audio message using Whatsapp, or any other kind of audio in any other app EXCEPT system apps like the camera.

I made a few tests which led me to believe this is a software permissions related issue.

The microphone works just fine when doing an old fashioned call or when recording a video with front or back camera. The microphone does not work at all when I try to record an audio with a 3rd party app (or actually apps that can be deleted, like voice memo), with none of them ( I tried a few). I did check all these apps had the given permission to access the microphone, I tried the noice cancelation thing, factory reset, all of it.

Why do I think this is permission related? Try this at home. Go to Whatsapp (might work with some other app), record a video with sound, play it, you don't need to send it. Now record an audio message and send it. This has always worked for me, this audio message works just fine, proving is not hardware related. After the first audio sent after this method, it fails agaim, but if you go through the whole process, it works for 1 audio message

I purchased a brand new iPhone 12 about a month ago. My iPhone 6s was in good working order but I wanted a new one. The 6S Still works perfectly with the microphone when using FaceTime, WhatsApp or other video conferencing apps. The iPhone 12 does not work properly. I took it back to the Apple store and they could not solve the problem so they gave me a brand new one. The problem still exists on the new one, so I believe it is either a microphone speaker design problem or a software issue

The reason I believe it is a speaker microphone design issue, is that when I use a headset The problem is completely gone

I have tested this with four of my children in many parts of the country and the only solution is to use a headset.

There are two separate problems but no one can seem to wrap their head around that. One is software (choppy audio) and one is hardware (no audio). No audio is when siri doesnt work and voice memo doesnt work. If you can use these two features you most likely do not have the hardware problem that requires a phone replacement.

I have the same choppy audio issue with my 11 Pro and 12 Pro. And burnt a months over this issue. Accidentally in the last week, audio seems fine when the phone is oriented in landscape mode for FaceTime/Whatsapp video calls. Problem returns when phone oriented in portrait mode.

IOS update 14.2.1 will fix the problem :-)

iOS 14.2.1 is supposed to fix it.

And there is no prohibition against suggesting products unless you might profit by recommending them.

The noise cancellation mic is in a different location on the 12. An XS case won’t have an opening for it.

Last night, Apple told me they were working on a software update for this problem, which will be released sometime next week.

I had the same problem but it was resolved after I restored my iPhone 12 Pro Max with iTunes.

Mine works when I take off the case

I exchanged my phone and the new phone is working perfectly, using the same case I used with the first phone.

Can I ask everyone here: do you have a case on your phone (and if so, what type? Does the bottom have holes or is the middle of the bottom completely open, with just the corners of the phone covered)? If you use a case, have you tried removing it and checked whether the problem persists?
