microphone does not work on iphone 12 pro

I recently bought the iphone 12 pro. When I use facetime or facebook messenger video chat, the audio becomes choppy for the other end. Is it a hardware problem or software?

iPhone 12 Pro, iOS 14

I have spent about 2.5hrs on the phone with apple today about this issue. In the past few days I have turned my phone off and on, tried FT with and without WIFI, removed my phone case to see if it was interfering with the mic, nothing has helped. I decided to try FT on my Ipad to see if how that went and it worked just fine. When I talked to apple today they had me restore my phone. The first time the restore froze and never actually restored it, I did it a second time then it finally restored setting. After the fresh restore I made a FT call and it was still choppy on the other persons end, I have no problems hearing them. Called apple again, I was going to restore a second time but I told this guy(as well as everyone else) about this thread and here is the convo.

Apple Tech: "No I'm not going to have you restore it again, if everyone is having this issue than I'm sure another restore isn't going to fix it. It will probably be fixed in the next IOS update."

Me: "I have told all the other apple techs about this thread and they said they haven't heard about any issues with this so how do you know this will be fixed in the next up date?"

He didn't really answer this question

Apple Tech: "They are wrapping up the newest update right now so if you can hang on for a little bit I'm sure it will be fixed."

Me: "How long is a little bit?"

Apple Tech: "A couple months."

.......................SO I'M SUPPOSED TO PAY $50ISH DOLLARS A MONTH FOR A PHONE THAT IS OVER A $1,000 FOR IT TO NOT WORK FOR A " COUPLE MONTHS"????

He then had me try one more thing, turn FT off restart my phone and then turn FT on again, I made a FT call and for about 10 min there was no choppyness butttt then it returned. I'm so frustrated I don't know what to do besides return it?!!

My case was designed for the iPhone 12 specifically. I do not cover the mic. I hold the phone on the sides. I did the noise cancellation on and off. It has been updated to 14.2.1. AND I got a new phone to replace the hardware and IT STILL HAPPENS ON THE SECOND PHONE!

I have tried everything that you have suggested and it does not work. This is an Apple problem that they MUST fix!

I had this same issue on my iPhone 12 pro and I did setup a genius bar appointment. After a series of test, we noticed that; microphone works properly through normal network calls but not in whatsapp, facetime, messenger, ... calls. Also, we tested the lower microphone using the voice memo app which produced a static "zzzzzzzz" sound.

At the end of a day we ordered a replacement (probably a hardware issue????). So I will advice anyone to try testing the microphone with the above tests. If it does not work, get it replaced by Apple so as to save some precious time. I will eventually update on my replacement request.

i had the same issue and support walked me through some steps as it looked like iMessage and FaceTime were still registering through my old phone; so access your previous phone in setting and toggle off iMessage and FaceTime; then toggle off and on the same things on your new phone and it should register the new device for those applications.

There is a software update for SOME microphone problems; go to Settings/General/Software Update and install 14.2.1 if you don’t have it yet.

Other things that can cause those symptoms are the volume too high on the other end of the call, causing feedback that mutes the phone, a case on the phone that was not specifically designed for your model, or the Noise Cancellation feature (try both with it on and with it off).

Is this a software or hardware fix i don’t know if I should claim warranty or wait for a update

Please read the 10 pages of the thread you posted to. The problem has more than one cause and more than one fix; some causes are software, some are hardware, and some are usage issues.

But at the very least update to iOS 14.2.1, which is supposed to fix the software issue.

I have got the same problem, what I have found to be the issue for me is that when using speaker I hold my pinky on the bottom on the phone which has to be where the mic is because as soon as I remove my finger the mic works.

Think this is pretty bad from a design perspective, a lot like the antenna problem with previous iPhones for certain hand positions...

I just hung up with Apple because of my FaceTime phone call with a client and it all the connection problems that the last software update was supposed to fix, but obviously did not. I was told they are actually working on an update right now to specifically address the iPhone 12 Pro’s microphone/call issues and it should be released sometime next week (the week of the 14th). Fingers crossed we all can put this issue to bed and have working iPhones!

i purchased an iphone 12 pro max Nov 14 when using speaker phone cuts in and out. Phone has been in case from day one! I have taken it out to see if that what was causing issue, still cutting in and out. THE ATT rep said they can't hear me. I have contacted apple/ATT everyone has just dragged me along- apple told me switch my 7 sim to my 12, well we know that can't happen because 7 4G. Phone has been reset, cut off switch to tower, whatever ATT does to consider a fix, they then told me i had to pay 200.00 for warranty even though i have not made 1 payment on the phone. They are mistaken if they think i am going to pay 1450 for a phone and then give them another 200.00 for a warranty for a phone that is not even 30 days old. apple is putting out defective equipment and selling it and consumers are paying the price

Despite being told last week by Apple that this update would be fixing the microphone problem, when I downloaded it, I noticed in the description of what it was to fix, the microphone was not included and neither was the issue that some people have with their calls dropping mid sentence. VERY frustrating!
