microphone does not work on iphone 12 pro
I recently bought the iphone 12 pro. When I use facetime or facebook messenger video chat, the audio becomes choppy for the other end. Is it a hardware problem or software?

Bought a new 12 pro max for my wife about a week ago. Didn't think about testing it out of the box first before transferring her data over from her old 7 plus. So don't know what IOS version the 12 came with and if the mic was working then or not. We had to update to latest version (14.4) in order to transfer wife's data over and so we did. Transfer went well and everything appeared to be working fine. A few days later wife tried to make a Facebook messenger call with me and I couldn't hear her at all. We then tested FaceTime and tried making phone calls...other couldn't hear a thing...nada. Tested the Voice Memo app and when playing back a recording all we could hear was loud static. To Google we went looking for a solution or to see if others were experiencing similar microphone issues. Low and behold, we found two threads, this one and another at: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/252186963?page=1
Did all the troubleshooting and even did a factory reset as a new user and issue still there. Download Phone Diagnostics on the App Store (apple.com) as suggested from someone on the other thread, ran it, and the bottom mic FAILED!!! Using a Bluetooth headset works but such an inconvenience. Took the 12 to Apple store and returned that sucker before the 14 days was up. So disappointed to have paid over $1000+ for a phone and the mic doesn't even work! I especially feel sad for my wife as she was really looking forward to the new 12 pro max, and we were going to use it to shoot photos at our upcoming baby shower :( Holding out on getting another 12 until there's an official fix or Apple acknowledges it. Might even have to wait for the 13 or switch over to Android.
It has for a while:

I really don't understand why this issue hasn't been solved yet. Seems to have something to do with feedback from the other end: some people reported not sounding choppy anymore once the person on the other end muted their mic... Or when switching to earphones instead of using speakerphone whenever the problem occurred. That's not an actual solution though, a phone in this price range should just work perfectly when using FaceTime or calling hands-free. Was hoping it wouldn't be an issue for the 12-series anymore, but looking at these new posts, nope..!
I have to apologize....I previously reported the 14.2.1 update fixed my Iphone 12 mic problem. The bluetooth/accessibility/ hearing aids were cutting out on my wife's Iphone 12 and it was the 14.2.1 update that fixed that problem. My phone still has the mic problem and T-Mobile is replacing it.
In my case Apple has replaced my phone for a new one and now I have no issue at all so far, running on 14.3 beta 2. Before I had problems with 14.2, 14.2.1 and 14.3 beta 2. So it seems in my case it was a hardware issue.
I just hung up with Apple because of my FaceTime phone call with a client and it all the connection problems that the last software update was supposed to fix, but obviously did not. I was told they are actually working on an update right now to specifically address the iPhone 12 Pro’s microphone/call issues and it should be released sometime next week (the week of the 14th). Fingers crossed we all can put this issue to bed and have working iPhones!
Unfortunately I can’t find the letter apple had sent me but if I find it I will send if BUT under consumer affair laws in Australia you are still able to return your phone to where you purchased it as long as you can show it’s faulty. We bought ours at JB hifi and regardless of having a confirmation from Apple , we had do show JB hifi the fault which was the mic/speaker when using it on loudspeaker. The problem was obvious so they had to refund/replace.
Just try not to cover the mic when you FaceTime, the hand or the mobile stand will block the mic and become choppy.
try rotate the phone in landscape and see if the mic working.
That is what I observed so far, and is working on AirPods.
It is a hardware issue. My own I phone 12 as well as 3 of my friends I phone 12/ 12 pro has been changed by apple service centre.
Guys,
I got in touch with my carrier. They asked me to do several coding for network resettings and profile updating. The very next day, things seemed to be better. Yet, I couldn't feel very comfortable with my phone. I don't know if it was specific to my device, but the device didn't look stable to me. Surely, they are gonna fix bugs. Meanwhile I will go on with my stable XR and I am returning the new device to the carrier. It can wait a little longer.
Having this exact issue., and it's extremely frustrating. Spent 5 hours yesterday troubleshooting and restoring my device with Apple support and then called AT&T to see if it was a network issue, nothing worked.
Finally, just now,I made an appointment to bring my phone in and exchange it for a new one.
If your device is within the 14-day period you can ask for a replacement, no questions asked.
I called Apple support after trying everything on this post didn’t work. They made an appointment for me at a local Best Buy to do a hardware diagnostics. The hardware turn up ok on my phone 12 pro max.
I have an update.
Three iphone 12 pro's went back to Apple, very quickly three replacements were sent back. Unfortunately all three are still having the same issue. It is connected to whatever is close to the speaker/microphone at the bottom. If I hold the phone with nothing near the bottom, then it's not too bad. If i put a cover on it or put it on a horizontal surface so i can be 'handsfree' on a Facetime call the problems come back, very badly. So it is to do with the gap near the bottom of the phone.
Clearly they have a major issue which is not being looked into - or if it is then there is nothing coming out to specifically address the problem of noise cancellation - which I personally think is at the heart of the issue.
I will be complaining again to Apple.

This never happened on my 10. Its especially an issue if you stand the phone up anywhere because now it just covers the mic completely.
The microphone on the 12 is in exactly the same place it was on the X. And if you stand the phone on end it will cover the microphone - DOH!
I took my phone to Bestbuy and they did a diagnostic on my phone and found several failures. None with speaker. But once he cleaned the microphone, and charging port and rechecked the the diagnostic errors cleared. If problem continues to exit give apple a call back. After returning home I called my nephew and he said my voice did break up at times. My nephew sent the link below so I try these suggested fixes.

My husband has the 12 and I have 12 pro max and they both have the same issue choppy when on speaker phone or FaceTime unless we use our airpod pros while on FaceTime. They really need to fix this issue ASAP
The fix is to contact Apple Support using the link at the top of this page and arrange to replace your defective phone.
