Unable to use legacy USB class driver

Unable to use legacy USB class driver just appeared this morning on my MAC running 10.15.7 (19H2). do I need new drivers? Very annoying that it all of a sudden will not print on either of my LaserJet printers. Does this have to do with the last MacOS patch?

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 10.15

Hi there blairfromcoppell,

Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities. We understand you're getting a pop-up that says "Unable to use legacy USB class driver." We'll be happy to guide you.

Follow these steps: Solve printing problems on Mac. If the issue continues, let's also look at this resource: If a USB device doesn’t work with Mac. It may be necessary to refer to your printer's manufacturer for help with downloading and installing any updated drivers. We hope this helps.

Take Care!

Most printer drivers are working under Rosetta 2.

The thing is almost every OS X/MacOS update has broke a few specific printer/scanner drivers particularly HP legacy printers.

Some will get manufacturer driver updates some might set up using the built in Unix Gimp drivers (limited functionality) and afraid some just die.

Its been that way for as long as OS X 10 (and even before in the classic OS chooser) .

Its one of the issues corporates take their time to update

to solve the problem I installed the HP Smart printer app on my Mac. While I use legacy Laserjet printers that require a USB connection to print, the HP Smart app seems to have solved the expired signed code issue with the previous printer drivers that the MacOS was balking at. The HP Smart app is more than I needed and in fact I don't use it as a Print device controller at this point, but the printers started printing again just fine. I am aware I have made some assumptions as to the exact cause and correction but decide to go to HP the Print vendor for a solution and it has worked. Thanks for the reply

Apple M1 chips are incompatible with most printers!!

I spent Friday on phone with Epson support. We went over all the steps that I had already done and we came to the conclusion that Epson's software update for my printer which was originally released in November 2020 and whose latest update is December 2, 2020, apparently addresses the need to update for Big Sur OS but does NOT address the change from Intel chips to M1 chip. Their only advice was to stay tuned for possible updates. And I fear that I cannot simply buy a new printer (any brand) without knowing that whatever product I purchase may not be M1 compatible. I sure hope Apple is monitoring this forum and is able to reach out to printer mfrs. and offer us a path forward!!

Is Apple reaching out to mfrs. of printers and other peripherals?? I have a new MacMini with the new M1 chip. I downloaded a suite of drivers from Epson which included a driver for OS11.0, but I too get the "missing USB driver" message. It seems like there is a basic incompatibility between the M1 chip and printers, etc. Now I'm not even sure that buying a new printer will help.
