spinning wheel icon next to wi-fi indicating network activity

how do I stop the spinning wheel next to the WI-FI icon from constantly spinning?  It's eating up data and reducing battery power.  I've actually figured out what triggers this constant network activity. After I hard reset the I-Phone SE to stop the constant network activity, I can use every app with no problems until I use the microphone on the key pad to write/voice a text message or a note, then the wheel starts spinning non-stop until I restart the phone.   Does anyone know how to correct this problem?????????

The spinning icon means that some app is using data. You need to troubleshoot that. If you are using dictation everything you dictate is sent to Apple’s speech recognition server to perform speech to text, and the result is then sent back to your phone. This is the same server that Siri uses. So while you are dictating it will use data continuously, and for a while after you stop as it tries to refine the recognition.

But to troubleshoot go to Settings/Cellular and tap Reset Statistics, and turn off Wi-Fi, so all data goes over cellular. As you use the phone note when it is using data. After a few hours go to Settings/Cellular and the apps that have used data will be listed at the top of the page. You can see which ones used the most.

Yes, it is independent of how I exit Siri. After initially just waiting for Siri to dismiss on her own, I switched to the method you suggested (using the Home button to dismiss). I've used both during these past two days and neither is working as reliably as usual.

Interestingly, I've also been experiencing some sort of network issues effecting SMS/MMS (delayed receipt of messages and some failed sends). If the two issues are related, then that would point to the persistent spinning network indicator actually having some sort of interaction with the network, as opposed to just being a "cosmetic" issue.

pavtan:

I’ve tried to «get the spinning wheel … using dictation to text when in Messages», on my iPad Pro (12.9-inch) (2nd generation) running iPadOS 14.4.2; but, everything worked just fine, without even having the network indicator («the spinning wheel») during dictation. (Admittedly, I do have reasonably fast Internet.)

So. The issue you are having depends upon more than the Operating System (OS).

I hadn’t contacted Apple Support since doing the exchange through Costco, so I did that this morning to see what they had to say. The support person did acknowledge this time that this is a known issue that is being worked on, although his/her response was a canned answer. See screenshots.

(Edit: “those people” are the folks in this thread, as I sent Apple Support a link to the thread)

He even put in the notes “Ran cellular diagnostics and unable to duplicate issue”. Which is ridiculous since I confirmed with him that the indicator was spinning the whole time I was at the store and the whole time the phone was in his possession. Also, it’s not a cellular issue since it happens on WiFi or cell data. He also wrote “Steps to Reproduce: Verified issue during appointment.”

We’re getting off the topic of the thread here, but updates are not done the same for OTA vs iTunes. An OTA update only downloads and applies the parts that have changed in the operating system (referred to as the delta), while an update done through iTunes is a complete reinstallation of the operating system. I’m still not saying OTA is inferior, but I can see the reasoning behind doing a complete reinstall of the OS every once in a while (like on a major update).

Thanks for the confirmation. I guess the question is whether or not this is a fix or a coverup, lol.

Oddly, my phone’s battery seems to be depleting quicker over the past two days. I want to stress this is purely anecdotal, and I have not done any troubleshooting other than a soft reset. I just know that some people in this thread swore the persistent network activity indicator affected their battery life, whereas I was pretty diligent about always using one of the tricks to dismiss the indicator. So now I’m wondering if this fix is actually just a cosmetic coverup, and whatever wasn’t working correctly that caused the persistent spinning still isn’t working right, and thus is affecting my battery life. I’ll have to monitor over the next few days.

Its all good. I didn't say it didn't use network activity. I said it uses very little network. The indicator/spinner is not shown for every short network connection and in some cases it is not used at all. Some apps choose not to use it. I had mis-read your post above. yes, they stopped the network indicator from being used at all during dictation. Which in turn did solve the problem :)
