Connections to the server "imap.gmail.com" on the default ports timed out????

I have been dealing with this problems for weeks. Whenever I try to send an email using Mail, it goes to an outbox and sits there...with the above message. The only problem it with outgoing mail. Incoming seems to be delayed a little, but it is not the problem.

After awhile..maybe 15-30 minutes I with get a message that "the connections to host smpt.gmail.com on the default ports failed. Select a different outgoing mail server from the list below and try again..." So I choose Gmail and then..."Try with Selected Server." Sometimes it works, but usually I get another two or three of the same message before it sends.

The other two choices are iCloud and sept.comcast.net. But they do not seem to work either.

I am on my MacBook (my iPhone mail works fine, as does my GMail), and my OS is up to date.

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 10.13

Thank you! I tried it, but the outgoing mail goes into an Outbox and sits there. Perhaps I did not follow your directions correctly.

First I named it MailToGmail.

Then I moved the Wifi to the top. Should I have used one of the others?

Third, I do not understand "If using WIFI, instead of joining your Network from the list, click the Wifi icon on the top, join other network. Fill in everything as needed." I do not understand the last sentence.

Fourth, the Proxies do not show HTTP & HTTPS in the list. "SOCKS Proxy" is checked.

I entered all the numbers as directed.

When I did this, Wifi showed "No IP address". But it eventually connected.

I do have a NetGear Router.

Try this...

Make a New Location, Using network locations in Mac OS X ...

System Preferences>Network, top of window>Locations>Edit Locations, little plus icon, give it a name.

System Preferences>Network, click on the little gear at the bottom next to the + & - icons, (unlock lock first if locked), choose Set Service Order.

The interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list.

Sys Prefs>Network>highlight the Interface you're using>Advanced>TCP/IP>Configure IPv4: Using DHCP.

If using Wifi, instead of joining your Network from the list, click the WiFi icon at the top, and click join other network. Fill in everything as needed.

System Preferences>Network>choose interface>Advanced>Proxies Tab, make sure none are set, like for HTTP & HTTPS.

System Preferences>Network, unlock the lock if need be, highlight the Interface you use to connect to Internet, click on the advanced button, click on the DNS tab, click on the little plus icon, then add these numbers...
