After the last upgrade to 10.15.7 of macOS Catalina, the escape button has disappeared from the touch bar on my 15" Macbook Pro. It never shows up in any apps, where it used to show up before. It is not there pressing the fn key either. I read that 16" Macbooks have a dedicated Escape key. Is it possible my Macbook actually thinks it is a 16"?

Check if you have same issue in safe mode.

Note: Safe mode prevents your Mac from loading certain software as it starts up, including login items, system extensions not required by macOS, and fonts not installed by macOS. It also does a basic check of your startup disk, similar to using First Aid in Disk Utility. And it deletes some system caches, including font caches and the kernel cache, which are automatically created again as needed.
Thanks! - This solved the problem.
Want to add that I used the manual approach and typed "sudo pkill TouchBarServer; sudo killall ControlStrip" in the terminal. The Touch Bar briefly disappeared, then came back with the Esc key within about a second.
