Pass Through in video speak means that the signals (vanda; video and audio) pass through a chain of devices without recording midstream as in a DV copy, then play the DV tape into FCP X for capture.

The advantage of a DV copy is that TIMECODE is written continuously with no breaks. FCP X captures well.

The disadvantage is double handling/time.

Using the Pass Through method you only need to play the VHS tape but the disadvantage is no timecode.

That's why legacy FCPro had a NON-Controllable setting, it didn't require timecode.

Using FCP X there is NO non-controllable setting, timecode is required either on the tape or from a timecode generating device along with the vanda signals.

The nearest thing you can get with your current equipment is to use the QuickTime Player X as Luis suggested.

It is not finicky regarding timecode, so it's you best shot.

Using Catalina there are a few caveats.

First, FCP X requires permission to use drive space, this is done through the System Settings>Security>Privacy>Full Disc Access:

Also QuickTime Player should be set to Maximum that will create ProRes files that FCP X likes for editing:

Once you capture to QuickTime the the ProRes files are easily Imported to FCP X without doubling drive space.

You tell FCP X to "Leave Files in Place" rather than Copy in the Import window, this creates SymLinks:

Try a short test to get a Work Flow going.

Once the Work Flow is established you know it will work and there is no wasted time with dodgy footage.

I can use the old Mac Pro to transfer in the material for VHS and produce it in QT then transfer it to FCPX in the iMac. What I'm wondering is, can I in some way transfer the material straight into FCPX without the original transfer in to the older machine?

I again draw attention to my present system which is: Two Panasonic player/recorders with TBCs, a DSR11, TV monitor to show the analogue material working, a 2017 iMac with Catalina FCPX, and a 2006 Mac Pro with four HDs working with FCP 6 and 7 plus a Lacie external HD. The DSR11 firewire doesn't have a suitable male connection at present, nor does the Lacie HD.

Until recently I used a High Sierra iMac to transfer stuff into for editing and the Lacie connection fitted and worked.

It does seem to me that my original way of working the system will have to prevail and there is no way of introducing analogue material, digitised through may DSR11into the Catalina iMac? I accept, too, that by using tapes in the DSR11 I may be able to then pass it through to FCPX in the iMac?

Thanks for that, Luis.

I looked at the connectors and realised they are in fact not suitable for my present cabling so I've ordered adapters that should be adequate and which are due to arrive within the next few days.

My Lacie HD needs a compatible adapter, so does my DSR11.

What I can't get to grips with is the fact that in FCP6 and 7 there is provision for selecting analogue input whereas in FCPX that is not the case; however, the description with graphic detail by Alchroma and your contributions are worth a try so I'll be back later.

First - thanks people.

The trouble with this Mac Communities system is the lack of follow on knowledge from the previous inputs! No accusations here; just explaining!

I have outlined my system as containing amongst other equipment my older Mac, it being a 2006 MACPRO, one of the first of its kind. It does not see my latest iMac.

My Lacie external HD is equally serviceable within the system but has an outdated male end to its firewire cable so far as the iMac is concerned. However, I've also gathered enough info to try out a transfer connection from my DSR11 (which also has a incompatible cable end) into the iMac when I receive the relevant compatible cable ends.

Yes, Al. It’s called VIDEO2MAC (and comes from the firm itself) with an instruction sheet that is completely satisfactory and I managed the install followed by a successful transfer within quarter of an hour. Simple and efficient using SCHS connection from one of my two Panasonic FS200 SVHS Editing player/recorders. I now easily transfer and edit FCPX or FCP6 and 7 with either of my Macs; that’s the 2017 iMac and the 2006 MacPro.

There are other versions of this programme that are cheaper - mine was £44 total whereas I’ve seen it at £11.99 - but I’m not sure they contain the instruction sheet, a real must.

Hope this helps anyone.

VHS? You mean your material is still in those analog old tapes?

You need some way to convert this before editing in FCP, and you need specific hardware to convert the analog signal to digital.

Do you have any? If not, then maybe you'd better get someone to digitize those tapes for you.

Don't forget that this analog material will be in a very low resolution and the state of those tapes is probably not that great, so don't expect miracles.
