This article has helped me: I did the second option, first uninstalling and then reinstalling. Now I'm able to print and no pop-ups!
After trying several of the suggested fixes (see some of the many other posts on this topic), I finally deleted all the hp printer software that I found on my iMac and when I went to Preferences: Printers & Scanners, Apple popped up and said they had software to enable my printer.
Yes, it does enable printing without that error message (our printer is an HP Officejet 4500 G510n-z ) however now I cannot use it to scan.
