Problem with 5GHz Wifi on iPhone 12 Pro

Hey!

I just got my new iPhone 12 Pro yesterday and I’ve noticed some problems with the 5GHz WiFi at home. For instance, some apps won’t download data, the Apple Music app won’t play music and the Apple Photo app won’t update/download photos over the 5GHz network. Other services work normally, I can also browse the web with Safari over the 5GHz network. Some things work, some don’t. When I switch to the 2,4GHz network, everything works as normal, no problems at all. All my other devices though, for example iPad Pro or iPhone 11 Pro don’t have any issues whatsoever with the 5GHz network. It’s just the 12 Pro.

Tried restarting both my router and iPhone. I also deleted network settings on iPhone. It didn’t help.

Does anybody have an idea what this issue could be with the 12 Pro?

I had the same issue from purchase with the iPhone 12 Pro Max, checked IP, hub and DNS with no fix, took it back to apple and showed proof of where mine has issues connecting to the 5Ghz signal but, was working fine on 2.4Ghz unless AirPods Pro was connected and in use, then neither would work. The iPad Pro, and another iPhone XS Max were all working fine as normal.

Once I got the new iPhone everything was working fine until a backup and restore caused the issues to start again, from this I forgot the networks before backing up and restoring again, since then had been working fine,

Updated to 14.3 over the air and issues restarted, so I do have a feeling it’s software related more than hardware.

Been dealing with this exact problem for weeks. Have a newer XFINITY router. Started with our two new iPhone 12 Pros. No issue with iPad or iPhone X. It also acts weird in settings for WiFi. Sometimes when it hangs, it shows the WiFi icon and only switches to 5G/LTE when going into the WiFi settings. Then sometimes it doesn’t even see our WiFi (all while I can be using it for work with no problems). Apple either has a hardware or software issue with these phones!

I have the same problem with my iPhone 12 pro. Siri and all apple services such as Apple Music, Apple TV+, iCloud photo library and iCloud backup isn't working with the 5Ghz network, but works fine on 2,4Ghz and cellular. Everything else such as web browsing works fine on 5Ghz, and the other apple devices in my house have no problems with the 5Ghz network.

Thanks Lawrence but I don't think this is an IP conflict issue.

The DHCP server is in my control and I wouldn't even be posting here if that was the case.

The OpenWRT router just throws a fit shortly after the iPhone 12 is connected to the 5ghz network, no issue when it's on the 2.4ghz network.

Devices on other subnets and vlans are effected too and throughput is diminished for ALL devices.

I'm presuming the iPhone 12 is using some new wireless feature that earlier devices weren't and that this is not fully supported by my router.

To the apple support people - it's not the modem, it's not the router, it's not the ISP, it's the iPhone 12 - please take this seriously and attempt to resolve the problem rather than spitting out unhelpful answers from your checklist of typical "solutions for dummies" ;)

The is not a router problem. Use of the Wifi logging entries on an Asus router shows that the RSSI of the new Iphone 12 pro max is less that the Iphone 12 Pro and Iphone 11. Many routers have a security feature to disconnect clients with a low signal strength and this can cause random behavior. Whilst the private address should <not> cause a change in signal strength, it actually does decrease signal strength by 4db on both the iphone 11 and Iphone 12 series according to the router RSSI. This really is a problem with the new Iphones having less wifi signal strength and so as a result turning off the private address ( though it should not) gets you an additional 4db - just enough to rise above the background interference. The other item you have to turn off ( when signal strength is low) is settings-cellular-wifi assist - turn it off soo it does not keep switching between cell data and wifi. There has to be a problem on the wifi modem in the 12 pro max causing lower signal strength. every person on this list should log a support call with apple saying they have a signal strength RSSI problem, and the problem is exacerbated when private address is turned on ( the default). 2.4ghz travels further, and better through walls so thats why using 2.4 ghz appears to solve the problem. the problem with 2.4 is its like a 2 lane highway where 5ghz is like a freeway considering how close you neighbors may be.

very thorough analysis.... I think something is corrupted on the iPhone.. just a guess...

i tested iPhone 12 vs iPhoneXR. side by side to same Netgear home router on 5Ghz channel:

  • iPhone 12 was restored from XR.
  • no issue on XR, very low throughout in 12
  • reset network settings in 12 and still issue
  • no issue with 2.4Ghz channel
  • Reset network settings on 12 and still issue
  • Resolved it by doing this:
  • Forget SSID on iPhone 12
  • change SSID on router to some other name
  • connect from iPhone 12 and throughput issue gone
  • Rename SSID back to original name on router
  • Reconnect to SSID on iPhone 12 and no issue for a few days now

Update. Setting manual DNS has not completely solved my problem. (Yes yes I know. But it did make a diff so there is a SW fix reqd here). Again I have 2 WiFi issues with this new iPhone 12 Pro Max that I do not have on the older iPhone 8 - that I have here also(both phones on 14.3) Problem#1) 5Ghz is same same lower throughout as 2.4Ghz using the 12, even with line of sight to router. On the 8 the 5Ghz cxn gives 3x throughout. Problem#2. At some point the cxn will just not transfer any more data. Dead in the water. Happens on both 5Ghz and 2.4. Only way is to disconnect and reconnect WiFi (toggle airplane mode) to budge it.

setting the manual DNS fixes the throughput issue on the 12 - I have no idea why. It also increases the duration before I get a “dead in the water” but I’ve had that problem#2 now again after more than 48hours.

hopefully apple is working on a fix as it’s pretty annoying.

Ps: I use Speedtest to check my throughput. I’m happy to share screenshots if required.

we had to turn off nord vpn from Home Screen on our new iPhone 12 to fix this problem. Obviously, we won’t be able to use our iPhone on public WiFi now, unless some one (nord or apple) can fix this
